There’s a fantastic so-called supporting cast for the Comets and Kruger Edwards is one of the leaders. The athletic 6-foot-7, 200-pound forward has really emerged so far his senior season and especially at the Les Schwab Invitational, he was able to show what he’s capable of doing in Crater’s first-ever appearance in the event.
“It really helped us a lot because in the summer we don’t play the teams up North and they’re a lot better,” Edwards said. “They have better athletes and they’re better all-around teams and usually we play against teams with one or two good players. Those teams all had five, six good players. So we know we have to work a lot harder as a team and individually.”
On an individual level, Edwards had some shining moments. Over the four games he averaged 13.3 ponits and 4.8 rebounds, showing the ability to attack and finish at the rim with power. He was also able to finish through contact and was a sizzling 90.5 percent from the free throw line (19-for-21).
“I feel really good about how I’ve been playing and I’ve been working a lot harder,” Edwards said. “I’m getting to the basket – I used to just hover outside and I wasn’t as strong. But now I’m not scared anymore.”
Edwards is hopeful that college programs have been watching. To this point, the main schools that he’s heard from are at the JC level with Lane offering him a scholarship. While older brother Kiefer is at Southern Oregon, Edwards is keeping things wide open.
“I’m just looking to play really,” Edwards said. “I love playing basketball so if I can play (in college), I’ll do it.”
A continued great senior season should do the trick for Edwards, who feels the LSI certainly helped get them ready for the grueling Midwestern League race ahead. “Those teams were a lot better than the ones in our league,” Edwards said. “So we’re prepared to play that much better.”
Edwards currently ranks as the #68 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
