Prospect Spotlight: Jao Ituka (2021)
Jao Ituka, a class of 2021 guard from Gaithersburg, has been playing at a very high-level for the 5-2 Trojans this season. Through 7 games, he is averaging 27 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists per game while shooting over 81% from the foul line. Ituka is also making 2 threes per game this season.
“I am more confident in my shot,” Ituka told Prep Hoops during a recent interview. “My free throw shooting has improved. I’m also playing a lot smarter and with more composure.”
Ituka has embraced his leadership role once again this season. He understands that it’s his job to lead his team, play the right way, and do everything he can to make sure they come out with the win. Ituka is known for his ability to get to the rim, but as we alluded to earlier, he’s worked hard to keep defenses honest with his perimeter jumper.
“People think because I get to the rim a lot it means I don’t have a shot,” he stated. “If I’m open, I will hit the shot.”
Another underrated aspect of Ituka’s game is his playmaking ability. He’s not only a relentless rebounder but a willing facilitator as well. It’s only a matter of time before the offers begin to flow in for Ituka, who one local coach likened to Marcus Smart. In the meantime, he has one focus.
“To just go out there and play the right way every game. I want to go out there and win every game with my team, make it to states, and hopefully win states.”
