The sneaky 6-foot-1, 160-pound junior guard at Crater High School will certainly drop daggers from long range but he’s just as capable of getting out on the break and dunking it on your head. Chubb got a chance to do some of both over the holidays with the Comets at the first-ever Les Schwab Invitational appearance for the team and his hope is that it helps him get on the radar of some college basketball programs.
“It was a real fun experience just coming up and playing good teams,” Chubb said. “We knew we were going to be battling every game and that most games were going to be close. It was just a fun experience seeing all of the good players. I think I played better as the tournament went on – I started slow but kept on getting better.”
Over the course of the four days of the tournament, Chubb averaged 9.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists. Normally known best as a three-point threat, he actually did better with his game going to the hoop and scoring in the mid-range, shooting 12-for-18 (.667) on two-point shots while only hitting 4-for-16 (.250) from beyond the arc. During the tournament he even got loose on the break and finished off an alley-oop with a two-handed slam, something he’s doing more of this year.
“This season it’s been better for me getting to the basket and scoring inside a lot more instead of just sticking to the three game,” Chubb said. “Now, I can score on more levels on the court.”
Chubb is hoping to grab some more attention on the recruiting trail. He’s often accompanied teammate and good friend Nate Bittle on unofficial visits to the Oregon campus but otherwise, he’s wide open when it comes to his recruitment. “I’m looking at anywhere pretty much,” Chubb said. “I play baseball in the spring but I’m looking more towards basketball as I’m naturally better at it.”
More threes and dunks during the year will no doubt grab more attention for the junior guard. He’s expecting big things out of the Comets this season and he’s not shy to say it. “I think we’re going to win it all,” Chubb said. “We can take it all as long as we play together and play as a team, stick together.”
Chubb currently ranks as the #74 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
