In the case of Esyah Pippa-White, he’s not just getting some minutes he’s been handed the keys to the car. The versatile 5-foot-11, 150-pound freshman has started at point guard from day one at Gresham and quite honestly the best is yet to come.
Previously attending Columbia Christian through middle school, Pippa-White made the move to 6A and Gresham this year and he’s made an impact for the 8-1 Gophers. A natural scorer and shooter, the freshman has also made some improvements with his pure point guard skills. On a night when his shot wasn’t really falling, Pippa-White turned to dishing out dimes against McNary on Tuesday night. It was an impressive effort for a young man that’s still looking to continue developing his game.
“My dribbling and my shot have gotten better but I can always keep improving,” Pippa-White said.
There’s obviously a way to go but at this point, it wouldn’t be a stretch to be projecting Pippa-White as a potential college player. In fact, college basketball’s highest level could be a possibility. Pippa-White notes that his dream school is Duke (because of Coach K) but for now, his goal is simple.
“My goal is to just get a D-I offer, that’d be cool to get,” Pippa-White said.
College will be there in time. For now, what’s directly ahead is what Pippa-White is honed in on and as the Gophers get conference play started, he has a good sense for what Gresham is capable of.
“We’re going to make playoffs, we’re just going for that ring,” Pippa-White said. “The Mt. Hood Conference is going to be tough but I think we should be able to play with everybody.”
