Continue ReadingRoselle Catholic has been hampered with injuries all season, which has provided freshman guard Simeon Wilcher a chance to shine. His ability to impact the game was on full display against Manasquan at the Hoop Group Boardwalk Showcase, where he won MVP of the game. Wilcher provided excellent defense on Manasquan star sophomore Ben Roy, while being aggressive on the offensive end.
Older brother, CJ Wilcher, has been carrying the scoring load for the Lions as the Xavier commit is averaging over 20 points per game this season. Big man Cliff Omoruyi has been dominant on the interior and has established himself as the top shot-blocker in New Jersey. Richie Greaves and Niels Lane have missed extended periods of time due to injury, providing Corey Floyd Jr. and the younger Wilcher opportunities in the backcourt.
Both players have taken advantage of the opportunity and are key players for head coach Dave Boff. Floyd Jr. has been a solid perimeter defender and driver, while Wilcher has been the creative play-maker the Lions needed. He knocked down a pair of three-pointers in his last game against Olympus Prep, which makes him an even more dangerous scorer on the perimeter.
Wilcher excels at beating his defender off the bounce and getting to the rim, but can make defenders pay for giving him space from the perimeter. He is unafraid of the big stage as he has played some of his best basketball against Roselle Catholic’s toughest opponents. His nine points against Elizabeth were vital in Roselle Catholic’s come from behind win as he went toe-to-toe with Jayden Pierre and D.J. Watkins, one of the top guard duos in North Jersey.
NJIT commit Adetokundo Bakare and fellow freshman Ty-Laur Johnson gave Wilcher some problems, but the freshman bounced back against Olympus Prep with 13 points and eight assists. His ability to bounce back from a bad game is huge as the Lions have a bunch of tough games down the stretch. A rematch against the Patrick School on February 1 is looming where Noah Farrakhan, Kirk Parsons and Dionte Johnson are looking to take control of the game.
Camden guard DJ Wagner has established himself as the top freshman in New Jersey, but the battle is on for the second spot. Gill St. Bernard’s forward Mackenzie Mgbako has been solid all season for the Knights as the 6’7 freshman has six double-doubles so far this season. His ability to affect the game from inside and out puts him in a great position to secure the second spot in the 2023 rankings.
Wilcher has had a good debut varsity season as he has given Roselle Catholic a spark in every game he’s played. The freshman currently holds three high major offers and that list should grow as the season continues.
