The second week of January was very exciting for Wisconsin high school basketball fans. This week was headlined by multiple terrific individual performances and marquee matchups.
Prep Hoops Wisconsin takes a close look at some players who had outstanding weeks. If you want to see which teams stood out, take a look at the team of the week candidates. You can vote for player of the week by going on Twitter (@grant_matheny).
Johnny Davis and Carter Gilmore are miles ahead of any other prospect in the Wisconsin Mr. Basketball race. Up until this point, it appeared that Gilmore had a slight edge over Davis because he has played so well in the biggest games.
That changed this week.
Davis closed the gap by scoring 44 points in La Crosse Central’s blowout victory over La Crosse Logan.
David Joplin just continues to get better and better. Coming off a surprising loss to Madison La Follette, Joplin scored 41 points while also managing to corral nine rebounds and hand out seven assists. If the junior forward plays this good in March, Brookfield Central will once again hoist the Gold Ball.
Typically, putting up 17 points is not enough to earn a spot on this list. But, Gerald Gittens can be the exception. After scoring 17 points for SJNMA is a win over a really tough Lake Country Lutheran team, Gittens was finally awarded a scholarship offer from Minnesota Crookston University.
This could be the offer that gives Gittens a much-needed spark on the recruiting trail.
In Grafton’s big win over Nicolet, Alex Huibregtse put up 37 points on five made threes. He also eclipsed 1,000 career points. The Wright State commit has now scored over 30 points on four different occasions.
Honorable Mentions:
Huibregtse wasn’t the only prospect who stood out in Friday’s North Shore Conference bout. Nicolet’s Kobe Johnson was fantastic, scoring 36 points for the Knights in the loss. Johnson has stepped up to the challenge after Nicolet faced severe roster turnover heading into the 2019-20 season.
It is a crowded room at the top of Wisconsin’s 2022 class. Prospects like Jack Rose, Leon Bond, and Steven Clay are all fighting for the number one spot. As good as everyone else in the class is, Clay may be taking a step ahead of the pack.
The Menominee Falls superstar dropped 30 points in a loss to Germantown on Friday night.
Besides Patrick Baldwin Jr., Tyrese Hunter may have the biggest upside out of anyone in Wisconsin’s 2021 class. Hunter, who is supremely athletic and skilled, scored 26 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out five assists for St. Catherine’s in a victory this week.
