Who doesn’t love power rankings? Here are midseason power rankings for the Player of the Year in the EDC:
Blake Berg, West Fargo Sheyenne
Berg isn’t a runaway favorite for the award at this point, but he’s been the best player on the team that is in the mix to win the league. He’s taken his game to another level as a senior, averaging 16.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.0 steals. He’s getting it done on both ends of the floor. He’s rebounding. He’s been consistent and while his numbers haven’t been eye-poppingly ridiculous, he’s delivering terrific production on a team that has a chance to win a state title.
Grant Nelson, Devils Lake
If the award is given simply on bulk statistics, Nelson’s the easy winner in the EDC. The 6-foot-9 senior is putting up silly numbers, averaging 24 points, 17.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and a whopping 5.7 blocks. Devils Lake has been just good enough that Nelson stays near the top of the mix. If the Firebirds fall off, it’s hard to justify Nelson winning the award. If they finish in third for the EDC with somewhere around 15 wins or so, he’s deserving.
Cam Van Dam, Fargo Davies
Van Dam is the top guy on a loaded Fargo Davies and stuffs the stat sheet to the tune of 14.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. The 6-foot-7 forward can do it all on both ends of the floor and a lot of his value derives from his ability to be a jack-of-all-trades type of player. He isn’t the go-to scorer that Berg or Nelson are, but he’s incredibly impactful on both ends of the floor.
Hunter Lyman, West Fargo
West Fargo hasn’t been what it was expected to be early in the year but Lyman has done his part. The 6-foot-8 senior center is averaging 12.8 points, 11 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game and while he’s had a few rough games against teams like West Fargo Sheyenne and Devils Lake, he’s one of the best big men in the league and if the Packers are going to turn things around, he’s going to be at the forefront of the effort.
Grayson Haman, Fargo Davies
Haman is a longshot for the award but he’s been a catalyst on both ends of the floor for a Fargo Davies team that is the frontrunner to win the EDC. The senior guard has been consistent, averaging 11.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game, while handling a lot of the primary ball-handling duties on a team without a true point guard. He’s been terrific on the defensive end of the floor too, spearheading the Eagles’ defense with ball pressure and activity.
