Conference tournament are around the corner and some work still needs to be done. These players have done a lot late in the season towards preparing their teams for what is ahead. Here are the top player from last week’s exciting slate of basketball.
Taj Thweatt (2020) | Wildwood Catholic
Thweatt has been half of a dynamic duo for Wildwood Catholic. The West Virginia commit, along with Jahlil White, have been two of the top players in the state. Thweatt is averaging 19.6 points and 14 rebounds this season. He is coming off a week where he began with 28 points, 19 rebounds, and three steals against St. Augustine. He followed that up with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks against Burlington Township.
Maurice Odom (2022) | Union City
Odom has been a scoring machine this season with 27.8 points per game this season. The dynamic sophomore finished with 36 points in a win over Kearny to begin the week. He followed that up with 32 points and six rebounds against a top 10 team in New Jersey, Hudson Catholic. Odom ended his week with 28 points in a win over Hoboken. As a sophomore, Odom is already one of the top scorers in the state.
Quinn Calabrese (2020) | Wall
Wall has had a lackluster season to date. However, they are beginning to get hot as they went 3-0 last week behind Calabrese. It began with a win over Matawan where Calabrese knocked down seven three’s and finished with 23 points. In a blowout win over Red Bank Regional, Calabrese led his team with 18 points. Calabrese finished with 23 points in a 66-36 win over Jackson Memorial.
Zach Manorowitz (2020) | Pennsville
Manorowitz has been a big scorer since he entered Pennsville. In a win over Triton, Manorowitz became the program’s all-time leading scorer. He finished with 37 points in the win. He added 21 points in a loss to Penns Grove and 32 points against Palmyra. This brought his career total up to 1,338 points.
Jamarques Lawrence (2022) | Plainfield
Lawrence is one of three sophomores on this list and for good reason. He scored 38 of his team’s 57 points during a one point loss to Westfield. Plainfield would win their next two games against Union Catholic and Matawan. Against Matawan, Lawrence finished with 26 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Logan Wejnert (2022) | Waldwick
Waldwick completed a perfect 3-0 week led by Wejnert. He hit seven shots from deep in a win over Palisades Park where he finished with 29 points. Wejnert followed that up with 19 points and 18 points over Waldwick’s next two victories.
Devin Strickland (2020) | South Brunswick
South Brunswick is 10-3 on the season after picking up three wins last week. Strickland led South Brunswick to a big upset victory over Burlington City, who is ranked 20th in the state. He scored 18 points in the victory. Strickland would go on to score 28 points against Perth Amboy and 21 against Old Bridge. The senior is scoring 20 points per game this season.
