Colin Glover, Hewitt-Trussville: Offensively Colin had a tough night, but he was a pivotal piece for the Huskies. He was very good at individually breaking the Mountain Brook tenacious press. He kept his cool and used calmly worked the ball up the court. He was able to drive and find the open shooter, often times his brother Cameron. He had a big block late in the game during garbage time as the game was out of reach. This is special because he never gave up despite the score. Colin was good at cutting off the fast break. Most times, players will back up until it’s too late and then give up an easy layup or get called for a blocking foul. Sometimes when he would pass from the wing into the post, he needed to bounce pass the ball instead of a chest pass which was easier for the defender to steal or deflect.
Christopher Pickett, Hewitt-Trussville: Christopher was all about making a big play. He wasn’t afraid of stepping in front of a charging offensive player to take a charge. He had a huge block. He looked like vintage OBJ going deep for a pass and finishing the layup. When going for a rebound, he needs to make sure he always goes straight up and not bring his hands down. 9/10 times the ref will call a foul if you’re not straight up. He also got a little pushy when going for rebounds. Find that position first and then box out, rather than push for the rebound.
Hopkins Long, Hewitt-Trussville: Hopkins was all over the court Friday night, dictating the pace of the game. His head was always up and he was surveying the floor. Early in the game, he passed to a cutting teammate but led him into a lose-lose situation forcing a charge. He cleaned those mistakes up as the game went on. He was able to attack, but also step out and confidently shoot the three ball. He had harassing individual defense with active hands and forcing turnovers. He finished with 17 points.
Robert Haley, Mountain Brook: Robert brought instant energy from the start. He took two big charges with one late in the second quarter and the other early in the fourth. He was strong as he attacked the basket, not getting pushed off his line. He had a beautiful 1/2 court length bounce pass to the streaking Colby Jones for the layup. He always had a knack for driving and finding the right person, whether the big or the guard on the wing.
Colby Jones, Mountain Brook: Colby was clearly the best player on the floor. He was excellent at drawing contact and getting to the free throw line. He can spin either way and finish with either hands. He has incredible hang time which allows him to float above the defenders and get easy buckets. It seemed like he always knew to make that “one more pass” and get the easier bucket when he could have forced his own shot. He quietly led the Spartans to win the regular season area championship pouring in 28 points.
Carter Sobera, Mountain Brook: Carter quietly contributed to the Spartan’s success. He was harassing on defense forcing double teams which led to turnovers. He would receive the ball in high post and patiently let the offense run its course and distribute where he needed to. He finished with 12 points.
