As expected, the game was played at a high tempo and a lot of points were scored. Ireton seemingly took control in the first half, leading by double digits at times, but O’Connell fought back and trailed by just 7 at halftime. Ultimately, the Cardinals were able to outlast the Knights by a final score of 95-82. Here we recap this hard-fought contest by highlighting the most intriguing prospects.
ARIEL GODDOT | IRETON ’21
Goddot is listed at 6-foot-4 but has long arms and is versatile defensively. He has good lateral quickness which enables him to switch screens. Goddot is solid at the point of attack and is not easily beaten off the dribble. On the offensive end, he demonstrates solid footwork in the post, where he is comfortable scoring in a variety of ways. He also makes smart cuts off the ball and is a strong inside finisher.
PAUL LEWIS | O’CONNELL ’22
Lewis played aggressively and made some impressive plays while under pressure. The dynamic lead guard prospect was able to consistently get downhill and create shots off the bounce, both for himself and others. Lewis showed the ability to finish with either hand around the rim and do so from odd angles. He was active defensively, where he recorded a game-high 5 steals.
SESE MOBUTU | IRETON ’20
Mobutu started this game red-hot, scoring 16 of his game-high 36 points in the first quarter. The athletic and skilled guard prospect shot the ball exceptionally well from the perimeter, connecting on 7 of his 16 attempts from three. Mobutu also looked to attack the rim where he embraced contact and was able to finish through it. Defensively, he was active and alert. Mobutu exhibits a good feel and was able to make an impact on both ends throughout the game.
DAVID ONANINA | O’CONNELL ’22
Onanina is still a bit raw offensively, but one thing you can’t knock is his hustle. The sturdily-built post prospect was relentless on the boards, ran the floor with purpose, and finished strong inside. Onanina showed good patience with the ball and more often than not made the right read when doubled. He also played solid defense, taking a couple of charges to earn his team extra possessions.
WES PETERSON | O’CONNELL ’21
Peterson has a good blend of size and athleticism, but his skill also showed in this game. The 6-foot-5 wing prospect shot the ball well from the perimeter but also mixed it up nicely off the bounce. Peterson seeks contact in the paint and can finish through it.
MASON SO | O’CONNELL ’23
So was put through a tough test against Ireton’s relentless pressure, but he fared quite well all things considered. The lefty lead guard is efficient with the ball, handles it well, and very good at utilizing ball fakes to keep the defense off-balance. So showcased his touch by finishing high off the glass against a shot blocker and made all of his free throw attempts.
TYE THOMPSON | IRETON ’21
Thompson’s competitiveness came out in this contest. He initially stood out with his activity level on the boards. Thompson is very good at rebounding out of his area. On the offensive end, he looked to get downhill aggressively and showcased good body control when finishing at the rim. He did not shy away from contact and played with a high motor throughout the game.
SAGE UWEMEDIMO | IRETON ’21
Uwemedimo is a versatile scorer who did a bit of everything for the Cardinals. Listed at 6-foot-5, he has good footwork on the low block and a few go-to moves. Uwemedimo is also capable of facing up and attacking the rim. Defensively, he was very active and disruptive as a result of his length and motor. Uwemedimo recorded a handful of deflections and steals.
