Unfortunately for BL, Jake Milkereit, one of their star players, suffered a leg injury just minutes into the game and would not return. The Friars competed hard, but the Cardinals began to pull ahead big midway through the second quarter and never looked back, winning the contest 71-59.
Here are eight intriguing prospects from the game:
Jaylon Tyson – 2021 6’5 Small Forward (Method Academy) John Paul II HS – Tyson is an explosive athlete out on the wing. He can hit the three from the catch but is most dangerous when he gets downhill and attacks the rim. The junior small forward punched home some emphatic dunks in transition vs. the Friars. He is also a great defender both on and off the ball.
Nate Dominick – 2020 6’5 Small Forward (Marcus Smart YGC36 (Adidas)) John Paul II HS – Dominick can do it all offensively. He can shoot, dribble, pass and rebound. The senior is a dynamic offensive presence who can operate in the post as well as out on the perimeter, showing off his stellar shooting ability during this matchup by drilling several triples. He has a high basketball IQ. This is definitely someone to keep an eye on.
Jalen Tot – 2020 5’11 Point Guard (Method Academy) John Paul II HS – The senior point guard is a speedy ball handler with a tight handle. Tot can stop and start on a dime. He is a twitchy athlete who can slice through the defense to get his own off the drive while simultaneously looking to find his teammates for high-percentage looks. His court vision is tremendous.
Jajuan Tot – 2020 5’11 Point Guard (Method Academy) John Paul II HS – The other Tot is a great playmaker too and also possesses great speed. He can fly up and down the court. The senior guard knocked down threes from the exact same spot on back-to-back possessions, showing off his shooting ability from the catch. His quickness also allows him to be an excellent off-ball defender.
Cameron Corhen – 2022 6’9 Power Forward/Center John Paul II HS – Corhen is still a bit raw, but the sophomore big man still has plenty of time to refine his skills. He has great size and length, making him a good rim protector while also allowing him to come up with a ton of boards at both ends. The underclassmen also displayed soft hands and goes up quick whenever he gets a touch deep in the paint.
Imo Essien – 2021 6’0 Point Guard Bishop Lynch HS – Essien had his hands full after Milkereit went down, being forced to shoulder the majority of the scoring responsibilities for Bishop Lynch. He handled it well, showing off his athleticism and change of direction. He is a skilled guard who finishes strong through traffic, floats when he gets inside, and plays with a ton of energy on offense.
Andrew Schindel – 2020 5’10 Shooting Guard Bishop Lynch HS – Schindel is a very accurate passer with good vision. He made some really nice passes in this contest, including some touch passes as well as some cross-court dimes. He didn’t have his best shooting night, but he displayed the ability to knock down some deep threes during warmups and was never discouraged from letting it fly from range during the game.
Logan Epes – 2022 Shooting Guard Bishop Lynch HS – The sophomore two-guard had to step up in Milkereit’s absence, and I thought he did a fine job. Epes made some tough contested shots, including a turn around mid-range jumper after a steal to close out the first quarter. He also showed that he can hit the three when left open.
