As we hit the halfway point of the season, Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the top performers so far, and forms our early season all-conference teams for the SEC! The SEC selects three teams of five, so we will do the same.
First Team
(POTY) JaKobe Thompson (6’1 2021 G, Racine Case)- One of the biggest scoring threats that Racine has seen over the past few years, JaKobe Thompson is my current pick for Player of the Year. Case is currently sitting in first place in the SEC with JaKobe leading the way at 18.7 ppg. Though those numbers are slightly down from the previous two seasons, his team is loaded with talent at all positions. The lefty guard is so good at finishing around the rim around defenders or through contact. His shooting numbers have been down this year, but when he gets in a rhythm, his step-back jumper can be dangerous. JaKobe also surpassed 1,000 career points earlier this season.
Jyon Young (6’3 2020 G, Kenosha Tremper)- At this point of the year Jyon Young, who has a surprise Tremper team at 9-4 (4-4 in conference), and is leading the SEC in scoring at 20.9 ppg, is my runner-up for POTY. Jyon is a long and lanky guard who plays with some flair and excels at attacking the rim. He can slither through defenders with his handles, and uses his long stride to euro-step past the last man to get to the rim. Jyon is also able to extend his range beyond the arc, and though he hasn’t been playing much point this year, he is capable of creating good looks for his teammates. Jyon’s hot start has Tremper looking like a surprise contender in the tough SEC.
Carter Capstran (6’6 2021 F, Franklin)- Capstran has been stuffing the stat sheet for Franklin this season, and though his team is just 6-7, he has some of the best averages in the conference. He’s scoring 19.7 a game while also pulling in a conference leading 9 rebounds per game. Capstran is an imposing presence with his size, but is a danger with his ability to step outside of the paint and knock down threes on a consistent basis. Defensviely he excels at going straight up to avoid fouling when going for blocks. He’s also capable of handling the ball, adding another dimension to his versatile game.
Jasin Sinani (6’3 2021 G, Oak Creek)- Sinani is an extremely well-rounded guard, who does a bit of everything for Oak Creek. He’s a very good ball handler who is rarely seen playing out of control. Offensively he can shoot the three, pull-up from mid-range, and when he gets into the paint he has good footwork to get some open looks around the rim. So far he is averaging 17.8 ppg with many of his best performances coming against conference opponents. The versatile guard could see a lot of D3 and D2 looks come his way during the AAU season, but for now he’ll look to help Oak Creek build upon their 8-5 start.
Terryon Brumby (6′ 2022 G, Racine Case)- There are a few players with more impressive numbers than Brumby this season, but he’s helped his team to a 6-2 start in conference, and no other team in the SEC has the depth of talent that Case does. Regardless, Terryon Brumby still averages an impressive 14.8 ppg, including a 35 point outburst against Oak Creek. Terryon is a 36% shooter from beyond the arc, but makes his money attacking the basket with his agility. Brumby utilizes a quick spin move in the lane that allows him to avoid opposing lengths, making up for his smaller frame. Brumby is also a capable playmaker who can set up his teammates, averaging 2.5 assists per game.
Second Team
Jeremiah Suber (6’1 2020 G, Kenosha Indian Trails)- Suber is currently leading a competitive Indian Trails squad in scoring at 16 ppg. Suber is a tough guard that loves to attack the rim, and has a soft touch on his floater in the lane. He is also a threat from beyond the arc, and has put up big scoring nights of 27 and 24 against conference opponents. He has a handful of D3 options for his college career.
Maxwell Glass (6’3 2020 F, Kenosha Bradford)- One of the more versatile players in the conference, Max has been producing at a high level all year for Bradford. He has the frame to bully defenders in the post, but is light on his feet with guard-like handles, making him a perimeter threat as well. His combination of inside finishing and three point shooting has him averaging 15.1 ppg this year.
Jake Gross (6’4 2020 F, Kenosha Tremper)- Gross has been putting up some big numbers this season, for an improved Tremper squad, and is among the top-5 in both scoring and rebounding in the SEC. If this had been writing two weeks ago, Jake would be on the first team. But his numbers have slipped over the past few games. That aside, he still averages 17 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest. With his length, effort, and shooting touch, Jake could definitely play himself into the first team by the season’s end.
Anthony Bernero (6’3 2020 F, Kenosha Indian Trails)- Anthony is undersized for someone who plays as his team’s center, but makes up for that lack of size with great post footwork and impeccable finishing. The 6’3 forward is averaging an impressive 15.3 ppg for ITA, and does it at a very consistent pace. His season low is 9, and his high is 24, meaning he is a consistent producer on offense every game.
Kael Stulo (6′ 2021 G, Oak Creek)- A sleeper guard in the 2021 class, Kael has quietly been putting up numbers for a solid Oak Creek squad. Kael is one of the bigger shooting threats in the league, knocking down three shots a game from beyond the arc, making up a big portion of his 13.9 ppg. The junior guard can create for himself off the dribble, or come off screens to knock down an outside shot.
Third Team
Da’Quantae Sawyer (6′ 2020 G, Kenosha Bradford)- Da’Quantae is a talented guard with handles, flashy passing vision, athleticism, and shot making ability. He’s averaging 12.8 ppg for a balanced Bradford team.
Jashon Lee (6’5 2020 F, Kenosha Bradford)- A big bodied forward with a decent jumper and strong finishing in the paint. Scoring 15 ppg with highs of 27 and 26.
Darrien Long (6’5 2022 F, Racine Horlick)- Strong and bouncy sophomore forward with a rapidly improving jumper from mid-range and three. Big rebounder for Horlick and has been improving his scoring as of late, averaging 10.4 ppg this season.
Jonathan Rankins (6’1 2020 G, Racine Case)- Extremely bouncy guard (6’10 high jump PR in track) who can finish at and above the rim. Scoring 11 ppg, including 14.9 over the past 7 games.
Amari Jedkins (6’8 2022 F, Racine Case)- Long and athletic sophomore who rebounds in bulk, scores at the rim, and is developing his perimeter games. Averaging 9.1 points and 7.7 rebounds for the top team in the conference.
