Continue ReadingIt was a good old fashion rivalry game when Union went on the road to take on Union Catholic. There was energy in the gym from the first possession of the game. Union Catholic came out hot riding a five game win streak coming in.
Union Catholic held a four point lead at the end of the first quarter. From there on out, the game was played evenly. They ended up with a 57-53 victory in this one. This was a game that had it all. The players were fired up for this one. They shot well from deep, played hard defensively, and shared the ball well. Here are the top players to keep an eye on moving forward.
Elijah Barlow | Union Catholic
Barlow was featured as one of the top players in the UCC coming into the season. He has not disappointed as he is leading Union Catholic in scoring. He finished with 10 points in the win over Union which was actually his lowest scoring output of the season. There is no doubt that Barlow will be one of the best players every time he steps on the floor. He has been getting it done from deep this season which has helped boost his prospect level.
Jakin Edmond | Union
Union’s leading scoring got it done once again. Edmond finished with 14 points and seven rebounds in the loss. Edmond leads the team in scoring and steals. He is second in blocked shots and rebounding. The 6’2 junior has emerged as a legit threat in a very talented basketball conference. Edmond plays bigger than his size which is a skill that is extremely impressive. He rebounds like a big man and plays defense on the perimeter like a guard. Edmond is impressive on both ends of the floor.
Matt Tracey | Union Catholic
Tracey is averaging just over 10 points per game this season. The senior finished with 14 points and a team high seven rebounds in the win. Tracey is Union Catholic’s leading rebounder on the season and that is no surprise after watching this game. He was in the right spot all night long and gets excellent position on the inside. Tracey scored six of his 14 points from the free throw line. This included some big fourth quarter shots from the charity stripe. Union Catholic is very well-rounded because of players like Tracey.
Emeka Iloh | Union
Iloh scored nine points and grabbed just three rebounds in the loss but the eye test did not fail him. Iloh has two double-doubles this season, three double-digit rebound games, and three games with three or more blocked shots. He is an inside threat on both sides of the floor. On offense, he is a skilled rebounder and player in the post. On the defensive end, Iloh is a rim protector in every sense of the term. And he is only a sophomore. This is a player that will continue to get better not just this season, but over his final two high school years.
Isaac Holmes | Union Catholic
Union Catholic is averaging 10 steals per game early on in the season and Holmes is one of the reasons why. He is lightning quick on the defensive end. He picked up three steals in the win over Union along with 10 points. Holmes is one of Union Catholic’s top all-around players. He can score the ball and make big plays on defense when needed.
Gavin Barrett | Union
There is something to be said about a player who can distribute the ball efficiently and get his teammates set up in the right spot. Barrett is that player. He finished with six assists in this game to add to his team leading total. Barrett finished with nine points and hit one shot from three-point range but his ball handling and passing ability is what stood out. The junior is a talented floor general and that will be important for Union down the stretch.
