Continue ReadingThis was a Tuesday night showdown at Central Regional when they took on Toms River South. It looked as though this one was going to be over early. Central jumped out to a 19-6 lead after eight minutes of play. Toms River South, who had lost seven of eight coming in, did not give up.
Toms River South was able to cut the lead by just two points heading into halftime. In the locker room, the team and coaches made some glaring adjustments. They came out and outscored Central 15-7 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to three heading into the final eight minutes. In the fourth quarter, Central was just to much to handle. They ended up hanging on for a 56-51 victory.
Eugene Brown (2020) | Central Regional
The 6’4 forward notched his fifth double-double of the season in this one. He has been a rebounding machine who uses his size and strength to gain position. Brown finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds in this game to lead Central to victory. He made some key plays in the fourth quarter to help his team avoid the upset.
Jalen Folsom (2020) | Toms River South
It has been a tough year so far for Toms River South but Folsom as done all he can to keep them competitive. He has been their leading scorer all season long and that did not change in this game. Folsom is a focal point of the offense and was a huge reason that Toms River South was able to make this a game heading into the final eight minutes.
Justin Soranno (2022) | Central Regional
Like Brown, Soranno is another big bodied forward. The only differences are that Soranno is 6’5 and just a sophomore. He finished with 12 points in this victory and showed that he is the most versatile player on Central. He is a forward but can handle the ball on the perimeter like a guard and drive to the basket effectively. Soranno knows how to use his size to draw contact on his way up. He is an impressive player and one to watch over the course of his high school career.
Nick Luongo (2020) | Toms River South
The seniors for Toms River South have been the leaders on and off the court all season. This begins with Folsom and continues with Luongo. He is a shifty guard who can get it done from anywhere on the floor. He is not a big time shooter but can step out occasionally and knock down a shot from deep. Luongo is an effort player who has a full battery and uses it on every play.
I-Meer Johnson (2021) | Central Regional
Central is set up nicely for the upcoming seasons with Soranno and Johnson. The 6’3 junior finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds in this game. He is coming off a 35 point, 18 rebound performance against Brick Memorial in his previous game. This was Johnson’s eighth game with 10 or more rebounds including four games with 15 or more. He is a true threat on the glass on both ends of the court.
