Florida commit Niels Lane, Binghamton commit Richie Greaves and Louisville baseball commit Alex Galvan all did not play. Despite Galvan’s absence, the Boardwalk Showcase was still filled with talented big men. Here are the post players from the 2020 Hoop Group Boardwalk Showcase.
Taj Thweatt, 6’7 PF Wildwood Catholic 2020
The West Virginia commit was at times the best player at the tournament with how he dominated on both ends. Thweatt could not be stopped on the offensive glass as he created numerous second chance opportunities for the Crusaders. He attacked the basket with a purpose and finished up with 16 free throw attempts. Thweatt showcased his athleticism with a pair of highlight-reel dunks and blocks. He is one of the top players in New Jersey and is looking for an appearance on the first team All-State this season.
Cliff Omoruyi, 6’11 C Roselle Catholic 2020
The senior big man may have struggled with his shot, but he was the best interior defender on the day. The 6’11 senior blocked eight shots on the game and altered numerous others. His presence forced Ben Roy to come up short on his potential game-winning floater, allowing Corey Floyd Jr. to pull off a perfect baseball pass to Xavier commit C.J. Wilcher who made the game-winning layup with 1.1 seconds left. Omoruyi had a pair of high-flying jams and opened up the game with a mid-range jump shot. He is an elite rim-protector and showed just how good he is at blocking shots in his performance against Manasquan.
Tim McEneny, 6’8 PF Manasquan 2020
Omoruyi was not the only big man with a standout performance as McEneny had a huge performance. The Cornell baseball commit got the start over the injured Galvan and did not disappoint with a game-high 13 points. He knocked down three triples, which provided Manasquan with the floor spacing it needed. McEneny was also solid on the defensive end as he limited Omoruyi to only six points. The 6’8 senior was unable to get Manasquan the huge upset victory, but McEneny deserves a shout-out for his performance against Roselle Catholic.
Charles Anyichie, 6’6 PF Ranney 2022
Middletown South’s Bobby Pirie was the best player on the game, but the 6’4 senior is more of a perimeter player. Anyichie was Ranney’s best offensive option as he finished with a team-high 16 points and 14 rebounds. He attacked the basket aggressively and had several nice finishes around the basket. Anyichie skied for rebounds on both ends of the floor and showcased his athleticism with a pair of nice blocks. Ranney was unable to get the win over Middletown South, but Anyichie proved that he is one of the better big men in the Shore Conference.
Malik Fields, 6’4 PF Neptune 2022
The Scarlet Fliers needed someone to step up down low and it was Fields who stepped. The sophomore power forward was able to get to his spot down low where Rumson Fair-Haven struggled to stop him. Fields showcased a soft touch around the basket and made several nice passes in the post. He was a force on the glass as the Bulldogs struggled to keep him away from offensive rebounds. Fields finished with 13 points, which were huge in Neptune’s 57-56 victory over Rumson Fair-Haven.
