The annual Topeka Invitational Tournament celebrates teams in the city by pitting them against teams from around the state. Here are a few highlights from day one:
1) Highland Park picks up a win:
The Scots were just 3-18 last year and haven’t had much to celebrate in the local tournament in the past few years. But coach Michael Williams’ developing program picked up a morale-boosting win over KC-Washington to improve to 7-2.
2) Topeka West rides bench to overtime victory:
While Elijah Brooks and Trevion Alexander led in scoring with 22 and 21 points respectively, it was the bench that came up huge in the late-going. Junior Dylan Wolf came in late and scored 10 points, including a pair of enormous three-pointers. Freshman Xavier Alexander contributed two late free throws. Junior Aaron Lira tossed in 7 points. William Peterson and Chris Hargreaves each played big minutes as well.
3) Big man CJ Powell was big:
Highland Park’s 6-foot-7 junior scored 21 points against KC-Washington.
4) Big man King Sutton was bigger:
Topeka West’s 6-foot-6 senior went crazy trying to avert an eventual loss to Wichita Northwest. Sutton accounted for 38 points and 11 rebounds.
5) Hayden fought, as usual:
Despite struggling to match the talent of their opponents, the Wildcats never back down. They fell behind 39-23 at halftime against Lawrence. But Hayden outscored their opponent in the second half, led by 18 points from senior John Roeder.
