(1) Arbor View at Faith Lutheran 1/13/20 6:30 PM – This game has so many prospects, storylines, and questions. Donavan Yap is a D1 commit. Azavier Johnson is trying to be one. Jaylon Lee has been dominant since his return, averaging 19 rebounds per game. There is a log jam atop the 4A Mountain Northwest with Centennial, Palo, and Faith all vying for Arbor View’s crown. The Aggies are still undefeated and a win would put some distance between them and Faith. The Crusaders have played well, however, they recently fell to Palo Verde. Can Azavier Johnson elevate himself into one of the premier players in the state? Who is going to step up alongside him for Faith? This feels like a good spot for a Jackson Williams game, he has the athleticism to match up with the Arbor View Guards, and I expect to see him defending Yap when the Crusaders go man.
(2) Durango at Spring Valley 1/14/20 6:30 PM– I was told this was a rivalry. We will see on Tuesday night. These are two talented, athletic teams. Both are hungry to break through into the upper echelon. Durango showed how close they are with a terrific effort last week, taking the 8 time defending Champion Bishop Gorman Gaels to overtime. Spring Valley has quietly been winning basketball games. They come at you in waves, making them difficult to game plan against. On Saturday, they got an electrifying performance from Frank Bartley to help them to their 6th straight victory. Expect a high energy, intense contest.
(3) Liberty at Basic 1/14/20 6:30 PM – Ok, I’ll bite. Basic has come from out of nowhere to become one of the more surprising teams in the state. Jaylen Berry is a stud, and John Board may be the toughest player pound for pound in the state. They play hard, and they play together. Now they embark on the second leg of a murderous conference schedule. After dispatching Foothill on Friday, the Wolves face a Liberty squad, desperate for a win. As always the Patriots are led by the play of Gonzaga Commit Julian Strawther. They currently sit at 2-1 and need this game if they want a chance to keep pace with Coronado. On paper, this should be the Wolves’ toughest test of the year.
