WILMINGTON, CA—The NO. 1 junior in the West Peyton Watson of Long Beach Poly didn’t waste any time exhibiting the skills and bounce to warrant that claim. He showcased his talent in a number of ways including knocking in a number of deep 3s as well dishing out some nifty assists. While Watson was the top individual performer, there were a few fine performances from some under-the-radar prospects in 2022 Daniel Jackson (Santa Monica) and 2020 Marland Harris (Westchester).
Daniel Jackson (Santa Monica)
2022, PG, 6-foot-3, 160 pounds
Jackson is one of the more intriguing combo-guards in So-Cal;Joel’s Take: Jackson was the biggest surprise of the day due to his frame that oozes upside and budding point guard skills. His ability to change speeds, keep defenders off balance, and uncanny vision was some of the attributes that caught our eye. He is smooth and slick with the ball in transition and his length is impressive. This young sophomore (15 years old) with a frame that suggests growth, projects to being one of the better looking point guard prospects in his class.
Jared McCain (Corona/Centennial)
2023, PG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: There are a number of potentially high-level guards—Michael Price (Crespi), Tyler Rolinson, and Darius Carr of St. Bernard come immediately to mind— in the Class of 2023 and McCain is part of that group. McCain is a sharp shooter with a good looking frame and he defends as well despite being so young. He’ll evolve into a top notch point guard once teammate Paris Dawson exhausts his eligibility.
Corey Cofield II (Birmingham)
2021, WF, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Cofield is a tweener (no position) at this stage, but he is one of the more explosive athletes in Southern California. In transiton he is a potent finisher where he can elevate over the opposition for the emphatic finish. He attacks the glass with energy and he is potential all-around defender. However, his jump shot needs to tighten up as well as his ball skills (triple thrieat game) in the half court set.
Alex Nokes (Santa Monica)
2022, PF, 6-foot-7, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the bigger surprises at this event is the emergence of Nokes. The big-framed 4-man exhibited a nice shooting touch out to 15-feet and he plays the game at a good pace. He doesn’t force the issue and has a knack for snagging rebounds in traffic and playing sound defense on the block.
