Sand Springs senior Davon Richardson and junior Marlo Fox combined for 40 points Tuesday night in a 66-62 upset against second-ranked Booker T. Washington. The win moved the Sandites to 11-1 on the season, the second-best mark in 6A and, perhaps, indicative of a boost in the coaches’ poll next week.
“Down the stretch, [Davon] made some big plays, I made some big plays,” Fox said. “I just feel like we all just came together as one.”
“I feel like our heart was big tonight,” Richardson said. “I feel like we woke up a lot of people.”
Each posted a remarkable performance and played from each others’ strengths, they agreed, and they believe that altruism will be an important factor in the Sandites’ chance for success.
“I feel like everybody was sleeping and nobody thought we were gonna win this game,” Fox said. “So when we came out, we just had to show everybody what we had going.
Fox, in particular, has played well as-of-late, including his Tuesday-night 24-point performance. Fox credited the skills training he received last summer playing for OK Run PWP for much of the evolution to his skill-set.
“I feel like all of my hard work is paying off,” Fox said. “I feel like when you wake up and do what you’re supposed to do, everybody thought I wasn’t gonna show up like this.
“I’m just waking a lot of people up.”
For in-state Division-II programs, Fox could be a potential steal in the 2021 class. Especially when it comes to timeliness, Fox may value those who take notice of his skills his junior year rather than next season.
A head-start could make all of the difference come-next-season when Fox chooses among his candidates as to where he wants his degree.
