Continue ReadingThe Grandview versus Eaglecrest game was a low scoring battle where the second half determined the winner in the game. Both teams went through runs of their own but in the end, it was Grandview who won the battle of Top-10 teams 46-36. Here are five standouts from the game.
Skylar Wilson up and down
Eaglecrest wing Skylar Wilson is a player that it is taking me a while to figure out as I truly feel he is a player capable of going for 20+ points almost every single night yet somehow he has only gotten there twice. Against Grandview, he finished with 11 points on the night which was tied for a team-high. He is a player that has the size to shoot over smaller defenders and he had some good looks at the rim. He was 4-7 from the field and he hit three 3-pointers. He only had one miss inside. He also had a fast-break dunk that was SportsCenter worthy. The Raptors will have to figure out a way to get him more involved and he has to be a bit more aggressive. He is a player that does not force much but when you are a top player in the class you have to be willing to take over. I am sure it will come.
Zion Ruckard limited
Grandview did a great job of slowing Ruckard down on fast breaks and limiting his opportunities to get in the open court as he really will punish teams with his speed. This was a game where he was not his usual efficient self as he went 5-15 from the field, did not hit a 3-pointer in the game and the Wolves made sure to make him get the ball out of his hands. He did finish with five assists in the game and had two steals in which one turned into a fast-break layup. He was tied for a team-high 11 points and will look to bounce back against Cherry Creek on Wednesday in an elite guard battle.
Ty Robinson starts hot
With the way that Robinson began the game, I thought this was going to be one of those big days that we have not yet seen from him this season but know he is capable of. He knocked down two 3-pointers in the opening frame and looked as if he were going to remain aggressive for the rest of the night but slowed down after and did not hit a 3-pointer for the rest of the game going 0-5 after. He finished with 10 points in the game. Robinson has to find ways to impact the game in other ways when his shot is not falling. He has the size and athleticism so he has to work harder on rebounds, he demands plenty of attention so assists should go up but there is no reason that he should not be taking more shots a game. This Eaglecrest team is made to stand out.
Caleb McGill closes
McGill and Lian Ramiro have been one of the best two-man shows in the state this season as they have had to carry a huge scoring load but have seemed to make it work time and time again. Against Eaglecrest, McGill finished with 18 points and had some timely baskets down the home stretch where he was hitting skyhooks. Then he started getting fouled and went to the FT line and was knocking them down he got six points from the charity stripe while also getting six boards in the game as well. Big day for the future Division 1 player even though it came a bit quiet.
Lian Ramiro, MVP of the game
Ramiro was the player of the game and really stood out in this one. He started out hot and did not look back as he made some impacting plays early which had his confidence riding high. He had a game-high 23 points and made Eaglecrest pay at the charity stripe where he went 9-9. He really changed the game with his outside shot. He had trouble scoring over Eaglecrest’s size inside so he stayed on the perimeter and Grandview swung the ball around until he got open looks. He went 4-5 from the 3-point line coupled with his FT’s and Ramiro had a big day. Grandview will go as far as McGill and Ramiro take them.
