The game between Edison and East Central started off with a back and forth first quarter. Both teams were able to find some rhythm and knock down some shots. Edison led after the first quarter 17-16. The second quarter was more of the same with Mason Alexander leading his Eagle team on the offensive end. The Eagles led at the half 34-30. The second half is where Edison started to take over the game. They did it largely in part to Alexander and Brandon Stuart having that one two punch. They led after three quarters 58-42. The fourth quarter was a bit of a formality. The Cardinals showed some fight down the stretch but the Eagles outlasted them to win 69-56.
Free Throws
One of the key factors in the game was the ability to knock down free throws. Free throws can win games and it very well could of made the difference in this game. East Central struggled from the line tonight as they made less than 50% of their free throw attempts. They went 10-21 from the line on the line and some of those attempts were at big moments In the game. While Edison will hope to shoot a little better than what they did tonight from the line they still were able to knock down a majority of their shots from the line shooting 13-18 for 72%.
The Key: Mason Alexander 2020 Edison Wing
Alexander was the catalyst on the offensive end of the court tonight for the Eagles. He was key in what the Eagles were hoping to accomplish on the night. They wanted to find him on the inside and get him a mismatch down low. The thing that makes Alexander harder to guard is his ability to stretch the floor and knock down the three ball. He knocked down a couple of threes tonight that made the Cardinal defense stretch even more to guard.him. He was also dominant on the boards. If he was in the vicinity of the board it seemed like he was going to come down with it tonight. Alexander did limit his play time tonight after getting into foul trouble but showed that he has a lot of potential to continue to grow as a player. He was humble and showed a want to win and keep getting better. He finished the night with 15 points.
Rebounding
Down low there seemed to be a mismatch between Edison and East Central. Edison has the taller more skilled played and it showed with their ability to dominate the boards on the day. They used their length and size to box out and grab the rebounds with ease. East Central did not get a lot of second chances after they shot the ball because of the Eagles presence on the boards.
The Fight
East Central did not go away easy on the night. They game Edison a great game throughout the first half and then had a sloppy third quarter which gave them a deficit that was just too difficult to overcome but that does not mean that they did not try. They fell down by as many as 18 points and fought all the way back to cut the lead to nine before having to foul to conserve time.
The Shooter
Brandon Stuart 2020 Edison Guard was the best shooter on the night for the Eagles. He was able to find his range from beyond the arc. He also showed the ability to score at the other two levels as well. He could take it to the hoop or hit a midrange floater if he needed too. Stuart is a streaky shooter and when Stuart is finding his shot he is hard to stop. He finished the game with a game-high of 21 points on the night.
