Domenic Rodiquez is the heart and sole of the Northville squad. The 5’10” point guard logs an average of 27 minutes a game while leading the team in steals, assists, and charges taken.
Northville’s Coach Sander speaks glowingly of him: “Dom continues to grow as a leader and is getting better at taking charge of the club. He regularly sacrifices his own opportunities on offense for the betterment of the team. He does all of the little things that rarely get noticed or show up in the box score.”
We recently caught up with Rodriquez to discuss his reputation as an energy player, his toughest matchup ever, and more.
Question
What is the biggest strength of your game?
Domenic Rodriquez
Biggest strength of my game has always been passing. Ever since I was young I always had good vision on the court and got my teammates involved in the game.
Question:
You’re developing a reputation as an energy player with a team first way of thinking. How does it feel?
Domenic Rodriquez
I love being the energy guy on the team, but this team is different because everyone plays with energy. No one on our team wants to let each other down and we play hard for each other. I give 110% because I know everyone else is going to give theirs.
Question
What are you most proud of in regards to your basketball career so far?
Domenic Rodriquez
I have always been the shortest player on the team al throughout my career but I always worked hard to make the next step. When I was younger I would usually sit the bench and not get much playing time but once I started putting in work in the off-season I started to get more minutes. I’m proud that I’ve had a great work ethic throughout my career.
Question
Who is the toughest player that you’ve ever matched up with?
Domenic Rodriquez
The hardest player I have ever guarded on defense was B. Artis from canton last year. He is easily the fastest player that I have guarded and one of the best I’ve ever played in my whole career.
Question
What would you tell a kid that wants to be as successful in the game as you’ve been?
Domenic Rodriquez
It’s all about how much you want to work at your game. I would always go to the gym with my teammate Brady most days and shoot and play one-on-one. My JV coach always said Teams are made during the season and players are made in the off-season.
Question
What NBA player has a game that reminds you of your own??
Domenic Rodriquez
My favorite player is Damian Lillard, however I think I play more like Chris Paul. Pass first guard who likes to play defense too. Chris Paul is always trying to get his teammates involved and gets steals on the defensive end.
Question
Who’s the best teacher you’ve ever had? Why?
Domenic Rodriquez
I’ve think the best basketball teacher I’ve had is my coach Sean Turner. I’ve known him for a long time and he knows how to coach me. He’s not afraid to tell me what I’m doing wrong and is always giving me pointers on my game. He is also a big reason I play hard he pushes the whole team to play hard every night and every practice. Another teacher is his brother Bret Turner. He gave me confidence when I was on JV to play point guard at the varsity level today.
