While Bishop Walsh and Paul VI struggled to get wins, there was still plenty to like from both teams. DeMatha secured a very nice non conference win against Mater Dei. Below are five standouts from the event.
2020 6’5 Dimingus Stevens | Bishop Walsh
His team lost but it was the Seton Hall commits shooting that kept Bishop Walsh from not getting blown to a talented Mater Dei team. Stevens, who usually starts, came off the bench on Friday night but definitely used that benching for motivation as he impacted the game immediately upon entering the game. Stevens led Walsh in scoring as he showed how has the capability of scoring in bunches by either creating his own shot, off the catch or pulling up from basically anywhere on the court.
2020 6’2 Jeremy Roach | Paul VI
Coming in a loss against Wasatch, Roach did everything he could to help PVI come away with a win even when his jumper was not falling. Roach excelled in getting past defenders and getting to the rim which is where he got most of his 23 points. He also rebounded really well for his size finishing with 9 boards. Roach looks completely healthy and is going to continue to fill the stat sheet all year long before he heads to Duke next year.
2021 5’9 Elijah Hawkins | DeMatha
DeMatha does not have the most elite point guard this year like they have had in recent years but Elijah was perfect on Saturday in a big win against Mater Dei. Three times in the first quarter he picked up Kentucky commit Devin Askew at halfcourt and got steals from him. Offensively he ran a smooth game dishing out five assists. If Hawkins can continue to play like this, it will go a long way for DeMatha this year in helping them win the championships they want to win.
2020 7’1 Hunter Dickinson | DeMatha
The recent Michigan commit was going up against a talented Mater Dei frontcourt but he held his own helping DeMatha secure a big non conference win. Dickinson was great around the rim and used his size and height to his advantage which allowed him to get easy buckets around the rim. DeMatha made it a focus to feed the ball to Dickinson down low and Hunter used his goods hands to catch almost everything. He is a constant double-double machine as on Saturday he finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line.
2022 6’5 Tyrell Ward | DeMatha
The talented sophomore is the next one up for DeMatha and is looking to play a big part in this year’s team. Tyrell hit some big time shots in the 4th quarter to stretch the lead for the Stags and looked super comfortable out there against elite competition. Defensively, he can be a force too. He was recently slotted at 3rd in our recent 2022 updated MD/DC rankings.
