The back story!! The first time these two played (Dec 10th, 2019) Independence beat Memorial at Memorial 53-50. That win came with one of Independence’s starters out due to injury but in all fairness Memorial also had a couple of players out due to sickness and injuries.
Tuesday’s rematch game also started with some notable players not playing or limited for both teams. Frisco Memorial’s Isaiah Foster who tore his ACL in the first game of the season. Frisco Independence’s Harrison Young & Malik McMurray set out for the first half for reasons unknown. I think both teams matched up good. It all came down to the team that wanted it more, the team that plays together and can handle the environment and the adversity of the game.
Frisco Memorial Wins 66-55.
Head Coach Gibson, said this was a meaningful game for them to be playing at this point. As a second-year program, their hope is to be one of the top four teams in the district, where anything can happen during the playoffs
The Warriors have a good group of kids that believe & trust in the process of “WE NOT ME”. Back to back team wins proves it! Last Friday they had a big home win vs Frisco Reedy 79-40 and now getting the revenge against the Knights 66-55 you can tell out the gate that Memorial’s focus was on the defensive side of the ball. On the offense side, the team played together and for each other, moving the ball very well.
The 6’2 |Guard | Drew Steffe Drew Steffe 6'6" | PG Frisco Memorial | 2023 State #122 Nation TX | For Frisco Memorial was my standout player of the game. This kid really impressed me and it wasn’t with his shooting abilities which we all know he has a wrist stroker. But what I was most impressed about was his ability to handle the ball and his decision making while controlling the game. This part of his game has been developing and has gone unnoticed. Steffe finishes the game with 15pts, 6 assists and a ton of great game decisions.
These two players for the Knights 6’5 Mitchell McCurtain & 5’9 Rhino Hernandez hands down were the best duos on the court all night long! I mean Mr.Rhino was driving and dumping to Doc.McCurtain all night long. Rhino is a solid pg that looks to pass first but also can shoot it deep while Mitchell does all the things that matter the most. He leads both teams in block shots & rebounds. McCurtain 11pts & Hernandez 8pts and a ton on assists
Notable players that shouldn’t go unnoticed:
5’10 | Avery Jackson | for the Warriors was the energy of the game. This kid has an overhauled motor, and gave players problems on defense and plays hard on both ends. He finished with 13pts & 3 steals.
6’7 | Josh Thrower | was another big reason the Warriors won in double digits, Thrower was big on the boards but even bigger on hitting the free throws, he went for 8-10 from the line and finished with 10pts.
6’4 Harrison Young & Malik McMurray for the Knights, both only played in the second half of the game but made a huge difference. They are a matchup nightmare. Young is a super athletic long guard who knows how to use his length, finishing with 9pts. Malik came off the bench ready and had the hot hand he is very quick and strong McMurray had 11pts.
In closing: The Warriors, play as one heartbeat. Moving forward all the Warriors has to do is focus on each game at a time and take care of their business and not worry about the standings. If they keep this tempo up they for sure will make one of the top four seed in playoffs. The Knights are strong, aggressive and talented and have all the tools to place first or second in district playoffs.
