Continue ReadingIt’s the new year which means it’s time for one of my favorite events in the state, the Chance Harman Classic in Floyd, VA. Nestled on the mountainside about 30 minutes outside of Christiansburg, this small town with one stop light that is best known for selling Christmas trees brings in some super talented teams from all over the area and beyond, all in the name of raising money for childhood cancer research.
The event has seen as much talent as any over the years including a number of NBA players like Andrew Wiggins, Keldon Johnson, Bam Adebayo, Miles Bridges, Dwayne Bacon, Frank Mason and Harry Giles, among others. The second day this year featured eight games with teams from Virginia, West Virginia, Florida and North Carolina. Here’s a look at part three of the day two standouts, featuring the standouts from teams from North Carolina.

James Wilkins III | 6’2” PG | Calvary Day (NC) 2022
I was excited to watch Calvary Day and I had heard a lot about Wilkins, who impressed in a number of ways as a scoring point who can make plays as well. A cousin of the Martin twins who became household names during Nevada’s run the past couple of years, Wilkins game can best be described as smooth as he’s able to get to his spots and make shots from all over. He has a wicked crossover that’s textbook and allows him to get in the lane, he can shoot the ball from deep and he showed good decision making as well. He finished with 17 points and 7 assists, including the game winner in their close win over Roanoke Catholic.
CJ McLenahan | 6’7” PF | Calvary Day 2022
McLenahan is far from a finished product, but I loved the way that he made an impact on the game without having to take a ton of shots on the offensive end. He’s an athletic forward that can play inside-out, he gets up and down well in transition and he showed he can guard multiple positions on the defensive end. He finished with 11 points in the win and he’s still got a lot of room to improve moving forward.
Zach Gibson | 6’6” F | Calvary Day 2021
A hybrid forward that can do a little bit of everything, Gibson is a walking mismatch with his ability to play inside-out and he’s a beast in the paint, especially on the glass. He showed confidence playing on the perimeter and in transition where he can put it on the deck and get to the rim, he guarded multiple positions and rebounded well on both ends but especially on the defensive end where he held the opposition to just one chance. He finished with 8 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
Christian Hampton | 6’0” PG | NW Guilford (NC) 2020
Hampton was a standout on day one with his huge game against Blue Ridge, and he continued his stellar play Saturday in their close win over Northside. A freakish athlete who plays way above the rim and gets end-to-end in a blur, Hampton used his athleticism to get to the rim both in transition and in the half court and had a number of plays that were highlight worthy. He’s also a good defender who uses his quickness to stay in front and shoot passing lanes, and while he needs to work on his outside shot he still exhibited plenty of characteristics of a division one point guard. He finished with 21 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in the win.
Dean Reiber | 6’9” PF | NW Guilford 2020
The Rutgers commit continued his dominance in the paint on Saturday against a smaller Northside team, and ditched his stretch shooting ability to go in the paint where he showed great finishing ability. His ability to do both makes him a mismatch, as he showed soft touch from multiple levels, scored with both hands around the basket and had some finishes above the rim as well. He finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks in the win.
Manrique Alvarado | 5’11” PG | Freedom Christian (NC) 2020
An available point guard hailing from Puerto Rico, Alvarado was fantastic running the show as he got them into their sets and handled pressure while getting everyone involved as well. He was always calm no matter what look the opposition gave him, he read the defense well and made good decisions and showed he can score from all over the court when he needed to. He finished with 11 points and 11 assists without turning the ball over once.
Aymeric Toussaint | 6’9” PF | Freedom Christian (NC) 2020
An athletic four man that can play inside-out, Toussaint dominated in the paint with his athletic finishing ability and caught a few lobs that had the crowd on their feet. He’s extremely mobile and runs the floor like a guard, he’s a good passer for his size and he’s comfortable stepping out and playing on the perimeter as well. The native of France finished with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field and pitched in 6 rebounds and 3 assists as well.
Jayden Doyle | 6’4” WG | Freedom Christian 2021
Doyle looked every bit like a division one guard with his blend of size, athleticism and skill set as he did a little bit of everything for Freedom Christian in their win. He moves well without the basketball, he rebounds well for a guard and he has the ability to score from all over the floor while also getting to the line. He’s a versatile guy who plays with a good motor and impacts the game in a number of ways, as he showed by finishing with 14 points hitting 4 three-pointers and pitching in 8 rebounds as well.
