Continue ReadingIt’s the new year which means it’s time for one of my favorite events in the state, the Chance Harman Classic in Floyd, VA. Nestled on the mountainside about 30 minutes outside of Christiansburg, this small town with one stop light that is best known for selling Christmas trees brings in some super talented teams from all over the area and beyond, all in the name of raising money for childhood cancer research.
The event has seen as much talent as any over the years including a number of NBA players like Andrew Wiggins, Keldon Johnson, Bam Adebayo, Miles Bridges, Dwayne Bacon, Frank Mason and Harry Giles, among others. The first day this year featured five games with teams from Virginia, West Virginia, Florida and North Carolina. Here’s a look at part two of the day one standouts, featuring the standouts from teams outside of VA.
David Jones | 6’6” WG | Teay’s Valley (WV) 2021
The most impressive performance of the day has to go to TVCS guard David Jones who seems to have improved immensely since I saw him last summer. He’s also been a hyper athletic guys who plays with a motor which he did in this game, but he also showed improved handles and shooting ability from the jump and spent a good amount of the game as their primary ball handler. He scored from all over, had a number of highlight reel worthy dunks, showed solid playmaking ability and dominated from start to finish. He finished with 33 points on 12-for-16 shooting from the floor and had 12 rebounds in their win over Blue Ridge.
Brandon Brown | 6’1” G | Teay’s Valley 2021
A native of Bristol, Tennessee, Brown split time on and off the basketball and showed that he’s a very valuable piece to this team as a floor stretcher and shot maker. The lefty didn’t get a ton of attempts but he didn’t force things and took advantage of his opportunities finishing with 11 points and going 3-for-5 from deep. He has very good form from the feet up, effortless range and he’s a much better athlete than many give him credit for.
Josiah Hardy | 6’1” G | Teay’s Valley 2022
The young guy of the group that was impressive, Hardy is a native of Ontario who is going to make a big splash in the states when it’s all said and done. The 6’1” guard had moments of brilliance as he showed he can get donwhill and make plays, changes pace well and gets after it on both ends. He was a little careless at times with the ball but he still showed plenty of promise moving forward.
Kevin Little Jr. | 6’0” PG | Victory Rock (FL) 2021
I had never even heard of this school let alone any of their players, but they were a talented group that beat a tough NW Guilford team behind the play of Little. He isn’t the biggest or most athletic guard but he’s very shifty off the bounce, he can get in the paint at will where he can make plays for others or finish through traffic and he was clutch down the stretch icing the game at the line for them. He finished with 28 points and 7 assists in their win.
Gedeon Dimoke | 6’5” WF | Victory Rock 2020
Coaches in need of a 2020 wing still, I would suggest taking a serious look at Dimoke because he’s physically ready to play at the next level right now. He has a strong build in the upper body that he used around the basket to finish through contact, he shot the ball well from the midrange area and he’s a natural athlete that can play in an uptempo system. He finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds in their win.
Mohomadou Mbow | 6’10” C | Victory Rock 2020
As I said before for wings, if coaches are in need of a 2020 big I strongly recommend taking a look at Mbow who was highly productive in their win. He’s a little on the frail side but he has extremely long arms, he runs the floor well and he owns the paint where he rebounds well on both ends and finishes everything above the rim. He finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds in their win over NW Guilford.
Christian Hampton | 6’0” PG | NW Guilford (NC) 2020
Despite the loss, Hampton had another good showing after he was a breakout guy at last year’s event. The 6’0” lead guard is an athletic freak who is a blur in transition, has a quick first step and good lateral quickness and he’s as bouncy as they come allowing him to make some highlight reel plays in traffic. He also did a good job making plays for others in the paint, and he finished with an impressive 24 points, 7 assists and 4 steals.
Dean Reiber | 6’9” PF | NW Guilford (NC) 2020
The Rutgers commit who is known as a stretch four really brought it in the paint against a very big front court of Victory Rock. Reiber showed his underrated athleticism with a few big dunks in traffic as well as contesting shots, he was aggressive and demanded the basketball, ran the floor well and showed his solid skill set and touch from multiple levels. He finished with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Robbie Boulton | 6’2” WG | NW Guilford (NC) 2020
Another senior that’s available and had a big time performance for NWG was Boulton, who came out of the gates on fire against Victory Rock. The 6’2” wing showed great confidence in his shot, hitting three triples in the first half. The defense was shifting toward him after he scored 15 in the first half, but he showed the ability to attack closeouts and score in the midrange as well. He finished with 22 points and should be someone small coaches are all over.
