Notre Dame, the No. 4 team in Class 4, took control of the game and held a double-digit lead for most of the contest. However, Park Hills Central mounted a fourth-quarter rally to make it close, but Notre Dame was able to hold on for a 71-66 victory.
Here are some of the top standouts from the Cape Notre Dame-Park Hills Central game.
Cape Notre Dame
Justice Thoma 6’4″ (’20): The bullish wing player scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Bulldogs. He proved to be a matchup problem as he used his physical strength to play bully-ball on his way to the basket against any smaller guard who tried to defend him. When he didn’t attack the basket, he would pull up and knock down that smooth mid-range jumper, which he is very good at. He also facilitated well as he dropped some nice dimes to cutting teammates.
Tyler Landewee 5’10” (’20): The senior point guard scored a team-high 21 points and got his buckets in a variety of ways. He is a physically strong guard who can take the contact on the way to the basket. He stays low on the dribble to get where he wants to go. He had some nice driving layups and he also played well without the basketball with hard cuts. He knocked down a few perimeter jumpers and also got out and scored in transition.
Caleb Legrand 6’5″ (’21): An athletic post player who missed much of the first half with early foul trouble, but he made a big impact in the second half with eight points and four blocked shots. He is one of the best shot-blockers in Southeast Missouri and he displayed that talent on this night with his length and timing. He is a solid offensive player who post up strong around the basket and can finish well. He has made a nice jump this season to become a force in the paint on a consistent basis.
Kam Dohogne 5’10” (’20): The senior point guard finished the game with 14 points. The best part of his evening was that he sank all eight of his attempted free throws, including four in the closing minutes to help stall a Park Hills Central rally. He is a solid all-around guard who handles the ball well and is active on the defensive end. He moves around on offense and knocked down a pair of short jumpers.
Park Hills Central
Drew Hamski 6’0″ (’20): The shooting guard scored a game-high 29 points, which included nine 3-pointers. He had a cold-shooting first half where he scored only three points on one field goal, but he caught fire in the second half with 26 points and eight 3-pointers. He was knocking them down from all over the court with some being from well beyond the 3-point line. It’s the second time I’ve watched him and both games, he would get on this shooting streaks where he could not miss.
Breven McMullen 6’5″ (’20): The All-State forward finished with 13 points on the evening. He got the Rebels going early with seven points and a pair of 3-pointers before the Notre Dame defense shifted their emphasis to him. Although his scoring pace slowed down, he continued to rebound well and play some solid defense. He had a number of steals, especially in the low post when he did a nice job of moving his feet to intercept the pass.
Brent Wagner 6’3 (’20): The solid wing player scored 15 points and played a very good all-around floor game. He did an excellent job on the offensive boards as he had a number of tip-ins for buckets. He made a lot of hustle plays to keep his team in contact in the second half. He attacked the basket well and scored on floaters and tough takes to the basket. He gets a lot of things accomplished without being the focal point of the offense. That’s a valuable player to have on your team.
