“It’s been a lifelong goal of mine since I could watch basketball,” Thompson said of his nomination. “I’ve always watched that game and it would be great, you know, if I could get chosen.”
In the past month, Thompson has led the Hornets to a 6-2 record and a runner-up finish in the Tournament of Champions, where the future Jayhawk earned the Prep Hoops T.of.C Most Valuable Player after averaging almost thirty points a contest.
Thompson also finished fourth all-time in T.of.C. scoring.
“It’s a blessing,” Thompson said, “I just want to put on, not only for Tulsa, but Oklahoma as a whole.
“We got good players, but we kind get overlooked, Thompson added, “so, you know, I’m just trying to lead the way for the younger guys coming up.”
Thompson also explained the subsequent process of being nominated, which included a gradual cutting-down of the list until the final roster is selected.
Consequently, Thompson was named to the 2020 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy mid-season team, a list narrowed to the top 25 players in the country to select the top high school basketball player in the country.
From that list, ten semifinalists will be revealed on Feb. 6 before being narrowed again to five finalists on Feb. 20.
On March 10, the winner of the 2020 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy will be named.
