Sheldon’s Marcus Bagley, Mayfair’s Josh Christopher, Foothills Christian’s Yassine Gharram, Lynwood’s Jaren Johnson, St. Bernard’s Nick Bowden and Bosco’s Wynton Brown made up some of the top seniors in attendance, but in this piece we shine the light on the under-the-radar seniors who turned in strong efforts.
Zach Roberts, Capistrano Valley
The Cougars were in dire need of a spark after falling behind double-figures to Washington Prep in the third quarter: Enter Zach Roberts. The 6-foot-1 senior scored all 16 of his points in the fourth quarter to lead Capo Valley’s comeback victory over the Generals. Roberts connected on four triples in the fourth and hit all four of his free throw attempts.
Capistrano Valley guard Zach Roberts scored all 16 of his points in the fourth quarter of a comeback win over Washington Prep.Karl Ashley, El Camino Real
The 6-foot-1 point guard scored 10 points in ECR’s six-point loss to a very good Bosco team. Ashley is an aggressive downhill attacker in transition and did a nice job of getting two feet in the paint, drawing defenders, and kicking out to teammates for rhythm jumpers. Ashley also showed quick hands defensively and the willingess to step over and take charges.
Josh Tineo, Los Altos
Tineo is the kind of guy any coach would want coming off their bench. The 6-foot guard is instant offense from the perimeter as he finished with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, in the Conquerors’ blow-out win over Fremont. Tineo showed off a smooth shooting stroke from both behind-the-arc and from the mid-range level.
Josh Williams, Sheldon
Williams is one of those players who quietly goes about his business and impacts every aspect of the game. The 6-foot-3 point guard scored 16 points in the Huskies’ big win over Mayfair, including a game-high four 3-pointers. Williams plays with good pace on offense, doesn’t allow the ball to stick in his hands, and practices good shot selection.
Darren Tobias, Sheldon
Tobias is that glue-type forward who impacts multiple aspects of the game off the bench. The 6-foot-6, 200-plus pounder is a mobile transition athlete who rim-runs with energy and can finish in the paint with touch or through contact. Tobias has the athleticism to pull opposing bigs away from the rim and beat them off the dribble to get to the rack and score.
