Bijan Cortes commits to Oklahoma
Who is Bijan Cortes? Many Oklahoma fans have asked me that question today. Cortes is an outstanding pick up for the Sooners in recruiting for numerous reasons. First, Oklahoma was able to keep a member of the star studded 2021 in-state recruiting class home. Being able to keep high level in-state prospects in Oklahoma is very important for all D1 universities in our state.
The energy force around the game of Cortes is something to watch in itself. The young man is a firecracker heading to the rim with booming finishes at the basket. Fans are going to love the way Cortes can dunk the basketball for sure. Do not be duped there are many other things Cortes does on the court also which will lead the Sooners to wins.
At the Point Guard spot Cortes is similar to Ricky Rubio in the way he creates off the dribble and can drop a dime to a teammate at a moments notice. Cortes has great court vision and awareness. The athleticism and speed of Cortes have improved greatly over his high school career making it dang near impossible to stop him going to the basket when he has his mind made up. Defensively, Cortes brings intensity and a winners mentality to do everything to help his team win. Cortes is a winner for sure and has a state championship ring to back up that statement. Not only does he have a championship ring but he has only lost two games since the 7th grade in school ball. Crazy I know.
The biggest area in Cortes game needing improvement is his outside shooting. The good news is we continue to see him get better and better at shooting the jumper. With continued hard work Cortes will be just fine by the time he gets to Oklahoma. In the Lon Kruger system Cortes is a plug and play guy at the one. Cortes is a top 150 player in the country in my opinion. Coach Kruger and Carlin Hartman did a great job of identifying Cortes early and recruiting him hard. Could Cortes be a start of a star studded class for Oklahoma? We shall see, but the opportunity is certainly there.
