Continue ReadingPapillion LaVista South has had a great start to their season. The Titans are 8-4 and made a deep Metro Holiday Tournament run. On Saturday, they hosted the 4-5 Omaha Burke Bulldogs. The first half went back and forth, and Omaha Burke’s 27 point second quarter kept the game close at half, 43-41 Titans. Papio South blew the game open in the third quarter with team defense, fast paced offense, and hot shooting. Burke was held to 10 points in the 3rd quarter while giving up 32 to the Titans. The 3rd quarter was the difference maker and Papillion LaVista South won 88-57. These are the players that impressed and my awards from Saturday’s game.
Jared Mattley – 6’0 Guard – Class of 2020
The MVP and Best Offensive Performance of the game goes to Senior guard Jared Mattley who scored 24 points on 80% shooting. He was the real difference maker during the Titan’s third quarter run. Mattley caught fire, hitting back to back contested threes from close to 25 feet and buried another three less than a minute later. He pushed the ball up the court, and scored in transition when no one stopped the ball. Mattley didn’t miss any of his 2 point attempts and went 5/7 from three. Jared also added 5 assists, showing he can do more than score. He gives effort defensively, controls the offense, and is a creative distributor in the pick and roll.
Danair Dempsey – 6’6 Forward – Class of 2021
Junior big man Danair Dempsey had the Best Start to the game, waisting no time by scoring 11 points in the first quarter. He attacked the rim hard, scoring on 2 right hand drives, finishing one through a foul. Dempsey has a good first step and uses his length to extend to the hoop and finish. Once the defense starting sagging off to stop the drive, he pulled up and drilled a three pointer from the right wing. He also helped spark his team’s third quarter run with the Play of the Game, following a teammates missed transition layup with a two handed put back slam. His defensive effort and length disrupted the Bulldogs offense and earns him the Best Defensive Performance of the game. Dempsey finished with 18 points on 8/10, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Graham Cassoutt – 6’6 Forward – Class of 2021
Papio South’s big three is rounded out with lengthy shooter, Graham Cassoutt. At 6’6, Cassoutt can rebound, runs in transition, and finish with soft touch around the rim. What he does best is space the floor and knock down spot up 3 point shots. Graham has a smooth shot with a high release that is tough to contest. He finished 3/6 from the 3 point line and scored 14 points against Omaha Burke. His 39% three point shooting this season has created more room for players like Mattley and Dempsey to operate offensively.
Jaren Marshall – 6’1 Guard – Class of 2021
The Bulldogs kept the game close in the first half with a great second quarter from their junior point guard, Jaren Marshall. Marshall scored from every level, attacking the rim, pulling up in the mid-range, and hiding behind screens and spotting up to hit threes. Jaren is a score first point guard who is good at navigating in the pick and roll and creating for himself. Burke needs him to be an aggressive scorer to be competitive. Marshall finished with 18 points and went 3/6 from three.
Greg Brown – 6’4 Guard/Forward – Class of 2021
After starting the game on the bench, Greg Brown checked in near the end of the first quarter and made an immediate impact offensively. Brown attacked the rim, found cutting teammates, and hit a deep three in transition. He also made it tough on Denair Dempsey at times with his physical defense and size. Greg was the Best Player Off the Bench with 8 points and 3 rebounds.
David Moreano – 6’3 Guard – Class of 2020
David Moreano had a perfect game from the 3 point line and was big part of the Bulldog’s 27 point second quarter. Moreano hit threes from a variety of spots, pulling up in transition, working around screens to create space, and contested catch and shoot. He also did a good job of drawing contact around the rim but could have had a better game if he converted more free throws. Moreano was the Best Under the Rader Player and scored 12 points and went 3/3 from the three point line.
Donovan Moody – 5’8 Guard – Class of 2022
In a game dominated by upperclassmen, sophomore Donovan Moody impressed with his effort a leadership near the end of the game. With the game put away by the Titans 3rd quarter run, the benches were cleared most of the 4th quarter. Moody took advantage of this time and attacked the hoop and controlled the offense. He scored 6 points and his late game effort gets him the Best Underclassmen of the Game.
