Ty Dutton, Athens Bible: It’s odd to highlight Ty because he struggled to produce last night. But it wasn’t his production that stood out, rather his sound fundamentals. He resembled a player like JJ Reddick for the New Orleans Pelicans. He was extremely good at running baseline to baseline to get open. The best shooters are always on the move. He came off screens well and was always looking to get his shot off. It’s important when coming off the screen to come looking to shoot. You only have a second to get a clean shot off before the defense closes out. Ty struggled to put in the ball in but was excellent at getting open and getting his shot off. It is important, though, when shots are not falling to find something to get the metaphorical lid off the basket.
Walker Brand, Athens Bible: Walker led the way for the visiting Trojans. Standing at 6’4″ in Class 1A, you would expect him to hang out in the paint, but he showed out by being able to play inside and outside. He was excellent at drawing contact on jumpers and finishing through them. He was robbed of a 4-point play if the referee had seen it clearly. Walker loved stepping back to his left. It does need some work to create a little more separation but it also is important to gather your balance when stepping back or else your shot will be offline. He had an aggressive drive down the left side of the lane, but did not seem able to finish with his left, so he had to throw up a wild shot. If he can develop his left hand finish and better gather on the left step back, his game production will explode.
Charlie Morrison, Lindsay Lane: Charlie was the second head to the two-headed monster that is Lindsay Lane Christian Academy. He had quick hands on defense and able to poke the ball out when guarding straight up. He shot the ball very confidently. He had a couple first have threes, but exploded for three triples in the third. With all the attention on Tommy Murr, Charlie could sit back and knock down big shot after big shot. He finished with 26 points.
Marvin Fuqua, Lindsay Lane: Marvin seemed to be able to attack at will all night. It helps when you have Charlie and Tommy spacing the floor to allow you to drive. He was great at driving and drawing two or three defenders but then knowing when to kick out to shooters. He had the defenders going under screens forcing him to shoot, but that was no problem for him. He, himself, knocked down a couple jumpers. He had an effective jab step to the left and driving right, that being his best move. He will really improve if he can show a jab to the right or a cross jab and being able to attack right handed or left handed. He was athletic and able to adjust his shot in midair despite the defense.
Tommy Murr, Lindsay Lane: If you’ve been around high school basketball the last four years, you have surely heard the name of Tommy Murr. The Lipscomb commit and all time AHSAA leader in points scored really showed out tonight but was far from perfect. He scored a game high 43 points. Out the gate, he was on fire from deep. It seemed like anywhere on the court was in his range. He drew lots of attention which allowed him to make several flashy passes. It seemed like he tried a little too hard on making the flashy pass when he should have settled for an easier pass. At times, he appeared to check out on defense. Maybe he took a gamble on a steal, but watched the rest of the play unfold. He’s an incredible offensive player with a bag full of a talent, but it’s imperative he plays patience and locks in on defense. Those weaknesses are not exposed in Class 1A, but will be brought to light playing Division 1 at Lipscomb.
Athens Bible fell to 7-8 and will face RA Hubbard tonight. Lindsay Lane improved to 16-5 and will host Ardmore on Friday.
