The first half of this contest was very competitive with each team trading blows early on. However, the Marauders came alive in the third quarter, managing to take a double-digit lead and refused to surrender any ground from that point on. Marcus pulled off the upset victory on the road, ultimately winning by a score of 71-57.
Here are five takeaways from the game:
Marcus Enjoyed a Decisive Rebounding Advantage
This matchup was decided on the glass. The Marauders won the rebounding battles on both offense and defense, and it was a big reason why they were able to defeat their conference opponent. They were rewarded with tons of second-chance points thanks to their rebounding efforts. Cale Martens in particular had a monster game. The junior big man dominated the glass from start to finish and played a major role in Marcus’s road victory.
Marcus’s Bigs Were Too Much to Handle for Lewisville
Although Lewisville is loaded with athletic playmakers, they were unable to match the physicality and size of Marcus’s big men at both ends for all four quarters. Like I mentioned above, Martens could not be stopped as a rebounder, but he and Ben Joelson handled the majority of the Marauders’ scoring duties as well. They displayed excellent finishing ability at the rim while also giving the Farmers a ton of problems in the paint defensively. Additionally, Ryan Vaughan contributed to Marcus’s scoring output with his outstanding footwork in the post, his ability to run in transition, and even showed that he can hit the three from the catch.
Lewisville Possesses One of the Most Exciting Backcourts in the DFW Area
While they were unable to get the W Friday night, Lewisville’s guards further proved that they are an electric backcourt duo. Kylin Green is a twitchy ball handler at point guard who is tough to stay in front of. He is a tremendous passer with great vision who can also finish at the rim with acrobatics. Keyonte George, the Farmers’ shooting guard and the No. 1 ranked player in our 2022 rankings, is a phenomenal athlete and the perfect foil to Green. He is a skilled shooter from distance who can finish above the rim or with finesse on the break. These two are a ton of fun to watch on the offensive end.
Austin Pugh is an Underrated Sniper
The senior two-guard operates as the sixth man for the Farmers. He provides them with a knock down shooter who can come off the bench for Lewisville and drain the three ball. He hit his first three shots of the night, all of which came from behind the arc, including a buzzer beater at the end of the first quarter. He is a superb jump-shooter from the catch with a knack for finding open looks out on the perimeter.
Marcus Took Complete Control of This Game in the Second Half
The Farmers had a two-point lead in their home gym heading into halftime, but it was all Marcus in the third and fourth quarters. Senior guard Joshua Condon hit some big-time jumpers and played with an incredible amount of passion and enthusiasm that really sparked the Marauders on both ends in my opinion. Once Marcus’s guards started to chip in on the scoreboard, it was smooth sailing for the remainder of the contest as they cruised to a 14-point win.
