National Christian went up 2-0 but never regained the lead until 1:01 left as Riverdale controlled all game. After National Christian took the lead with 1:01 left, Riverdale quickly regained the lead back and ultimately won by a final score of 57-52. Below are five answers to key questions involving the contest.
How was Jakai Robinson?
To be blunt, Jakai was pretty much irrelevant in the first half. He walked into halftime with 3 points off free throws. However, as soon as the second half started that completely changed and he took over for National Christian finishing with 22 points. He used his bigger body to bully his way to the rim and also displayed his nice jumper with very good shot mechanics. He also rebounds very well for his position as he constantly is going up for rebounds on both ends of the floor. In the second half he showed why he can play at the high major level.
How was Devon Savage?
Savage led Riverdale in scoring finishing with 16 points. Always known as an elite shooter, his defensive capabilities and rebounding were terrific. There were a handful of times where he saw his shot was not going to go in but he immediately crashed the rim to get his own rebound. Getting out in transition was something that he excelled in last night too.
Who was the most clutch player?
I have to go with the 2021 Guy Fauntleroy. The 6’0 floor general made big shot after big shot down the stretch to ultimately allow Riverdale to win. Fauntleroy has been known to have a certain clutch gene in his system over the years and it was on display again last night. He finished with 15 points and dished out a handful of assists.
Who were the best unsigned seniors?
For National Christian it was 6’2 Yuri Covington. Covington really kept National Christian in the game during the first half with his activity on offense. He was scoring in a variety of ways and was getting his teammates heavily involved with some elite passing. Covington finished with 16 points on the night.
Josh Walker has been a really solid addition to Riverdale which should ultimately help his recruitment in the long run. The first thing that stood out from Walker was an improved motor and overall bigger engagement in the game. He was all over the boards ending the game with 7 rebounds. He put the exclamation point on Riverdale’s win in a fast break dunk that guy the crowd to it’s feet. He was also very alert of defense and protected his area well.
What colleges were in attendance?
Three schools dished out assistants for the game Friday night as LaSalle, Howard and Stevenson were all present. There are prospects on both teams for all of these types of programs.
