Continue ReadingThis has been a terrific year for talent in the state. Nowhere is the depth of talent highlighted more than at the 3A level. This season several players have put up monster season and are in the hunt to take home 3A player of the year honors. In this article, PH takes a look at some of the candidates.
Nati Asfaw 6’5 PF Del Sol 2020 (#20PHN 2020) – Asfaw is an absolute load. The big man has put together a terrific senior campaign. He took home MVP honors of the Lake Mead Holiday Tournament earlier in the year. He’s a talented low post scorer with nimble feet and good finishing ability around the basket. He has powered Del Sol to a 4-1 record in conference.
Ethan Speaker 6’6 SF Boulder City 2021 (#8PHN 2021) – Speaker’s stock is rising in terms of both his college prospects, as well as his POY candidacy. His scoring and rebounding have led BC to a 4-1 conference record. He has transitioned into an Alph on the floor carrying BC through a difficult schedule. He’s averaging nearly 25 a night to go along with 10 rebounds, however, he has been a tear lately with games of 34 and 37 points.
Meshack Hawkins 6’0 SG Chaparral 2020 – Hawkins has the Cowboys at the top of the conference race. He’s been a do it all go-to guy for the team. Hawkins has seen time at both backcourt positions while leading the team in scoring. He’s good in transition whether he is creating or finishing. His January 30th matchup against Boulder may go a long way in determining POY honors.
Michael Klekas 6’3 SG Elko 2022 – Klekas has been nothing short of spectacular all season. The 6’3 forward has led Elko to an undefeated record in conference while putting up major numbers. Klekas is currently leading the state in scoring averaging nearly 26 per game. He is also pulling down nearly 12 boards per.
Elijah Jackson 6’0 PG Churchill County 2020 (#26 PHN) – If not for the play of Klekas, Jackson would be a runaway conference player of the year choice. He has been brilliant in leading the defending state champs to a 8-1 league record. It should be noted that he didn’t suit up the 1st game against Elko. His presence in the rematch will be needed and may determine conference POY honors.
Ray Daniels 6’6 SF Somerset Losee 2020 (#22 PHN 2020) – Daniels is a definite dark horse. He has done it all for Losee and his ability to will his teams to 3 wins is as impressive as some of the other candidates’ accolades. He’s a smooth swingman that can drive to the lane, or shoot it for 3 off the bounce. Daniels is forced to play with the ball in his hands a lot. Despite this, he still manages to get teammates involved averaging nearly 4 assists per game.
