Well, he doesn’t have to remember because the Dragons did it this season. Behind a strong second half from senior guard Jaylon Sanders and junior guard Jordan Jenkins, Collierville defeated the Roadrunners, 60-57, Friday night.
Here are three observations from the Dragons’ win over Ridgeway:
Jaylon Sanders has to play well for Collierville
The Roadrunners built a 21-10 lead early in the second quarter. Ridgeway started an 8-0 run at the end of the first quarter that continued at the beginning of the second quarter. Sanders scored nine points in the second quarter to bring the Dragons within 32-27 at halftime.
Sanders made big shots in the fourth quarter when Collierville needed some. He knocked down a 3 from the top of the key to put the Dragons up 45-44. Sanders made four free throws in the waning seconds to seal the win.
The 6-foot-4 guard led Collierville with 19 points. Sanders went 8 for 8 from the charity stripe.
His scoring was needed in the second quarter when the Dragons were down double digits. Sanders’ scoring was also huge in the second half. He has to make shots for Collierville (15-8, 5-2) to win games.
Jordan Jenkins isn’t a scrub
Outside of Sanders, junior guard Jordan Jenkins made big shots for the Dragons down the stretch. Collierville built a 51-46 lead late in the fourth quarter, but allowed the Roadrunners to go on a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead. Jenkins scored five straight points to give the Dragons the lead for good. He finished with 12 points and went 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
Sanders is obviously the team’s best player, but Jenkins can score the basketball, too. He isn’t just a player with a uniform on. He makes a difference for Collierville on the offensive end.
Dragons played solid defense and forced turnovers
Collierville didn’t waver when it was trailing. After big shots from senior wing Kendall Thomas, the Dragons kept fighting. Collierville’s defense stepped up when it needed to. The Dragons committed three offensive fouls on Thomas and forced turnovers that led to scores on the other end. Collierville played scrappy and outhustled Ridgeway for the 50-50 balls.
The team that wanted the win got it Friday night.
Thomas led the Roadrunners (8-10, 2-5) with 24 points. He was Ridgeway’s only bright spot on the offensive end.
