Indiana is full of great teams and talented players thus giving the fans incredible matchups every week. Join me, Kyler Staley, every Monday during the season as I preview the 3 Players, 3 Teams, and 3 Matchups to watch for that coming week. Are you ready? Let’s get started!
3 Players
Ben Cosner – 6’3 2021 W/F – Bedford North Lawrence: Where Cosner started this season to where he is now is very impressive. At the start of the season, it looked as though this 2021 prospect had trouble adjusting to a new coach, offense, and role which looked to have brought his confidence down. Now as we approach week 10 of the season, Cosner is playing like the player that he is capable of. He is coming off an 18 point game and it will be interesting to see if he can build off his past few games as the Star face a monster team in Jefferesonville. Watch out for Cosner to continue to get better each week.
Donovynn Sisson-Lewis – 6’1 2020 PG – New Haven: Lewis is our best 2020 PG that has yet to commit to a college. He is strong, shifty, and creative with the ball in his hands. He also can create some good shots for his teammates as well. New Haven has been playing alright this year at 9-5. Look for Lewis to lead the Bulldogs to victory against Fort Wayne Concordia and Columbia City this week.
Qu’Shawn Ware – 6’4 2023 SF – Crispus Attucks: Ware is one of the top freshman in the state and is a very important piece to Attucks. He is coming off a 21 point game that was a big part in his team’s victory. Ware is a lengthy forward that has a smooth touch to his game. Attucks has a couple of games this week, Ben Davis and Victory College Prep, that I feel Lewis can have huge games in. Keep an eye on this freshman for the next few years.
3 Teams
Greenwood Christian (1A): Right now the Cougars are the best team in 1A. They are currently 15-0 and players like Styles McCorkle and Champ McCorkle are playing very well. This week, I have a feeling that this team has a sneaky game against Central Christian on Friday. The 8-5 Chargers will be looking to have the biggest upset of the week.
Mishawaka Marian (3A): After being on a 7-game winning streak, it came to an end when the Knights lost to 4A Culver Academy this past weekend. I have Marian as a team to watch this week because I want to see how this squad will respond from a tough loss. They have 3 games this week (Bremen, Elkhart Central, Hamilton Southeastern) and it will certainly be a challenge for Richard Brooks and team.
South Decatur (2A): Decatur’s 14-game winning streak was put to a stop by Greensburg this past Saturday. Kind of like Marian, I am wanting to see how this team bounces back from a tough loss. They have a couple of games this week that they should be able to win, but sometimes teams go cold after having a long win-streak ended. I expect them to bounce back in a huge way.
3 Matchups
Forest Park (2A) at Southridge (2A) – Jan 31, 7:30 pm: Forest Park should have more pressure on them than Southridge for this game in particular. Park has lost four out of their last five and have a brutal road schedule ahead. This is one of the two games during this five away game string that Forest Park need to win to get back on track. Senior forward Isaac Uebelhor will need to bring his team together and get them winning again. Colson Montgomery and Southridge will for sure be a tough test.
Gary 21st Century (1A) at Kouts (1A) – Jan 28, 7 pm: Two of 1A’s top three teams will face off in this huge clash tomorrow night. Kouts is undefeated and Gary has stacked team. Coach Kevin Duzan (Kouts) does not have a team full of stars but has a squad that buys into his system. Johnell Davis has got Gary being a potential State Championship contender. This game will truly test Kouts.
Indian Creek (3A) at Sullivan (3A) – Jan 31, 8 pm: This game will have two 3A teams that are kind of lingering at the moment. People know that they are good but both have not done much to take that next step. Christian Simpson is a big part as to why Sullivan is on a current 5-game winning streak but Indian Creek does have the talent to stop that. The winner of this one will take that next step they need to during this final stage of the season.
