Ben Roy has been the lead dog for Manasquan since Alex Galvan‘s injury, while Jayden Pierre is guiding Elizabeth to a deep run. Roselle Catholic’s Corey Floyd Jr. may not score like Roy or Pierre, but his all-around play on the perimeter is what the Lions need. The sophomore class is full of high-level scorers with some players routinely eclipsing the 30-point mark. Here are the top scorers in the 2022 class.
Mark Armstrong, 6’3 PG St. Peter’s Prep
Armstrong led the Marauders in scoring as a freshman and is repeating the feat as a sophomore. The 6’3 point guard is scoring 21.8 points per game, highlighted by a 32-point performance against Memorial in his last game. Armstrong excels in the open court where he uses his speed to create, separation, get to the rim and finish through contact. He is also an adept three-point shooter and has an underrated mid-range game. St. Peter’s Prep is in the middle of a 12-2 season because of Armstrong’s scoring ability.
Zion Cruz, 6’3 CG Hudson Catholic
The state’s top sophomore may not be scoring like Armstrong, but he deserves a spot on this list. Cruz is a blur in the open floor as he uses his speed to create easy opportunities for himself. The 6’3 combo guard can create his own shot off the dribble and finishes with authority around the rim. Cruz is not just a driver as he is capable of burying three-pointers. Justin Glover and Isaiah Griffin are also key member of the Hawks’ backcourt, but Cruz runs the show for Hudson Catholic.
Maurice Odum, 6’1 PG Union City
To say Odum is carrying the scoring load is an understatement as the sophomore is responsible for nearly half of his team’s points. In the Soaring Eagles last game against Hudson Catholic, Odum poured in 32 of the team’s 44 points. The 6’1 guard is lethal from behind the arc as he is known to knock down three-pointers in bunches. He is electric off the bounce and has a good mid-range game. Odum has quite literally been Union City’s offense this season and is a must-watch player at all times.
Keon Sabb, 6’3 SG Williamstown
He may have had to miss a month due to transfer regulations, but Sabb is torching the nets since becoming eligible. The Glassboro transfer is averaging 23.7 points in his first three games for Williamstown. Sabb has excelled at getting to the basket where he uses his strong frame to draw contact and finish around the rim. He has a solid jump shot and can make opponents pay for leaving him open from deep. Williamstown has won all three of its games with Sabb in the lineup as the Braves look to improve their seeding in South Jersey Group 4.
Chase Clarke, F/C Newark Academy
The Minutemen may only be 4-7 on the season, but that does not take away from Clarke’s stellar season. The sophomore post player has been a force down low with 10 double-doubles already on the season. Clarke has shown off a soft touch around the basket and the ability to drive by his defender. While he has not made a ton of three-pointers this season, Clarke has showcased a solid shooting stroke at the free throw line. Newark Academy may not have a winning record, but Clarke is doing everything he can for the Minutemen to succeed in 2019-20.
