Blair Academy point guard Jaylen Blakes has had a great junior season, while Noah Harris is torching the nets for Rutgers Prep. Adama Sanogo dominated in his first game with the Patrick School, while Zarique Nutter has been solid all season for the Celtics. The junior class is filled with talented wings, but do not overlook the guards. Here are the top 2021 sleepers at the guard position
Freddie Young Jr./ Donavin Crawford, 6’3 SG Trenton Catholic
The Trenton Catholic guard duo may not get the same recognition as VCU commit Jamir Watkins, but they are vital for the Iron Mikes’ success. Young Jr. is an electric combo guard who is capable of playing both positions in the backcourt. Crawford is a marksman from behind the arc who can also take the ball to the basket. Both guards are solid defenders who can stay in front of opposing ball-handlers and alter shots around the basket. Watkins is the go-to guy for Trenton Catholic, but he needs Young and Crawford to lead the Iron Mikes to a strong 2019-20 season.
Isaiah Hill, 6’3 SG Union Catholic
The Vikings are 8-3 on the season and Hill is a big reason why. The 6’3 shooting guard can score from all three levels with his best offense coming in the mid-range. His 29-point performance against Hudson Catholic earned him an offer from NJIT, but he is more than just a scorer. Hill is also a good passer and can grab rebounds out of his area because of his athleticism. He has missed the past couple of games due to injury, but Hill is one of the more underrated guards in North Jersey.
Tazir Cantey, 6’0 PG Lindenwold
Cantey has been a scoring machine ever since he entered high school. The 6’0 point guard eclipsed the 1,300-point mark with a 45-point performance against Audubon. He recorded a triple-double in that game as he grabbed 10 rebounds and had 10 steals. Cantey has improved as a defender and passer in his junior season as the Lions have already eclipsed their win total from last season. He is one of the top scorers in New Jersey and should get more credit for his play so far this season.
Tasheem Anderson, 6’2 CG Newark Central
The Blue Devils have raced out to a 10-3 start this season and the addition of Anderson is a big reason why. The University transfer has excelled as the team’s primary ball handler as he leads the team in assists. Anderson is at his best attacking the basket as he can score easily around the rim or kick it out to shooters. He is also a solid perimeter defender and a good rebounder for a guard his size. Anderson has been huge for a Newark Central team with North Jersey 2 Group 2 title aspirations.
Christian Cevis, 6’0 PG West Morris
The Wolfpack may have lost their first game of the season to Watchung Hill over the weekend, but they are still a team to watch in North Jersey. Cevis scored a season-high 23 points in the game, but that is not the best part of his game. The 6’0 point guard excels at getting his teammates involved as he is averaging over 11 assists per game this season. He is also an elite on-ball defender as he has 46 steals in only 11 games this season. Cevis is one of the top point guards in North Jersey and deserves more recognition for his play so far this season.
