Continue ReadingAn instrumental part of the St. Pete Green Devils these past two seasons has been 2020 6’3″ guard Deondre Earley.
He is an athletic guard, who is both flashy with the ball and unselfish as a passer and pusher in transition.
St. Pete is 16-6 this year with a week left in the regular season. Six seniors graduated a year ago and it has been a different look for the Green Devils with 2020 6’1” guard Rivers Lenholt (transfer from St. Pete Canterbury) and 2020 6’5” forward Ferlin Joseph and 2021 guards Ray Perry and Mari Sherrod doing the brunt of the workload.
“The season so far has been good. Throughout the season, we have had some up and downs but that’s just how it when you are getting used to new players and new lineups from a whole different team,” Earley told Prep Hoops. “Now that we have been able to find that chemistry, we’ve been able to pick up some big wins and gain momentum coming into the playoffs soon.”
Earley has offers from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Mary Baldwin and Roanoke.
He has also drawn interest from the likes of Barry, Columbia, Bethune Cookman, Gettysburg College, Tampa, Oglethorpe, Saint Leo, Eckerd, Rhodes College, Bethany Lutheran, Stetson and Elms College. Tampa, Roanoke, Gettysburg and Oglethorpe have reached out to him the most recently, Earley says.
“Universities tend to say they like my ability to run the floor and get everyone involved while also being able to score from outside and inside the arc,” Earley said.
In terms of the most growth, he’s seen in his game this season, he pointed to his ability to control the team and be a leader that sets a standard.
“I’ve also grown the mentality that I’m the best player on the court at all times which allows me to come out and give it all I got every time I play, working as much as I can to secure the team win,” he said.
Earley pointed to his biggest strengths as his ability to score at any time, lead wherever he is on the floor and get everyone into a rhythm.
“I would like to improve consistency on my shot because no matter how many shots you make it’s also important on how many shots you take,” he said. “You can never be perfect there, so I want to improve my shot to the point where it’s mighty close to perfect.”
A college is getting a hard working kid on and off the court in Earley. He has a 4.6 GPA and says he is going to give a school his all and more.
“I know I can give my all on and off the court being the student athlete that wants to be the best,” he said.
College programs will love Earley’s game and confident persona. He is an unselfish kid who simply loves the game and is a student of it. Look for him to pick up more offers here soon, he is an under the radar prospect who deserves a spot to compete at the next level and flourish.
