We added over 35 names to the 2020 class alone as these seniors have made adjustments to their game and have put us on notice. Here we focus on some of the state’s top combo guards as well as wings.
TJ Bamba — Lincoln
TJ Bamba is undoubtedly a Division I prospect and the No. 6 player in the entire class with all six others also going Division I. He has already signed to further his career at Washington State next season and is putting up a huge season in the process. He is a McDonald’s All-American candidate as he is putting up 26 points and 7.8 rebounds a game and willing his team to victories. Nobody in the state has as much of a load as Bamba is having to carry each and every night and he is still making a way to get it done. He has the size at 6’5, he can bring the ball down the court and create for himself or he can go inside and score with ease. He has put u[ 25+ points in six straight games and that is while seeing double teams. Bamba is the real deal and one of the best combo guards in the state.
Owen Koonce — Centaurus
Koonce had one of the most impressive summers of anyone. He helped lead his Titans team to countless victories including winning a Prep Hoops Hustle Region championship and the Northern League player of the year from a season ago is off to another incredible start as he is putting up 17.4 points and 7.4 rebounds a game to begin his senior season. Koonce’s versatility on both ends of the court separates him from other players in the class as at 6’5 he is not only able to dominate in the post against too small or slow defenders but he is able to put the ball on the floor and shoot it when he is open. He is a player that is able to play multiple positions and do whatever is asked of him. With being the team’s best rebounder he has been forced to start most possessions down low but that does not mean that he is not a player that you cannot put on the wing to create for himself and teammates as he is one of the best-unsigned seniors still remaining. Great start for him.
Christian Speller — Rangeview
There might not be a player in the state with a college-ready body as Christian has. He is built for strength and speed and his frame makes it easy for him to overpower guys and get around them when needed as well. Expectations were high for him heading into the season as he helped lead Rangeview to a state title last season as a positionless athlete but now this season he has seemed to have worked on every element of his game. He is knocking down 3-pointers, getting inside and finishing on smaller defenders and also showcasing his abilities as a playmaker. He is leading the Raiders in scoring at 11.8 points a game but also puts up a team-high 5..4 rebounds as well. Rangeview is defending their 5A state championship by being the No.1 team in the state with a perfect 13-0 record and with a wing like Christian who is willing to do a bit of everything it is easy to see why they are winning so many games. The future Metro State basketball player is looking for a repeat.
Tristan Hurdle — Highlands Ranch
Senior captain Tristan Hurdle is one of the state’s best shooters and has the size to separate him from the pack. He is a 6’5 wing with unlimited range and it does not take much space for him to get it off. He can create off of the dribble or go within the flow of the offense. He also uses his length for rebounds and to create mismatches inside as well. Hurdle is a great ball-handler but plays well off-ball. He fills the lanes correctly, finds the open spot in the defense and is also a set shooter that consistently hits his shot.
Reece Johnson — Resurrection Christian
Reece Johnson has really turned it on his senior season and has been one of the most difficult players to defend in the state. He is a two-way player with high upside that has a nice shooting stroke, attacks the basket for easy lay-ins and dunks and also is a willing passer that makes the right play. Reece has led the No.1 team in 3A with 18.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists as well to show how much of an impact he has on the game. He also happens to be one of the most efficient players in the entire state as he is shooting 62% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc. As long he is playing at a high level, Resurrection has a. hance at winning it all and with already taking down the state favorite in Lutheran a few weeks back this becomes the team to beat.
