A good performance in a showcase could propel a prospect up the rankings, but can also springboard a team for the future. The same holds true at the Jeff Coney Classic as some players had dominant performances to carry their teams. Here are the top stock risers from the 2020 Jeff Coney Classic.
Zubair Lee, 6’5 SF Eastern 2021
Lee was absolutely dominant in the first half against Delsea as the Crusaders could not stop him down low. The 6’5 junior lived around the basket as the majority of his points came around the rim. Lee opened up the game with a transition dunk, but he also showcased his toughness with a couple tough finishes in traffic. He was also solid on the defensive end as the lengthy junior defended star sophomore Trey Simmons at times. Lee’s 17 points were second to Noah Klinewski, but the 6’5 junior greatly improved his stock against Delsea.
Tyrese Myrick, 6’2 SG Westampton Tech 2020
The Panthers were unable to knock off Camden Catholic thanks to an overtime winner by Zach Hicks, but Myrick was arguably the star of the show. He used his strong frame to get to the basket and could not be stopped off the bounce. Myrick was not just a driver as he knocked down four three-pointers in the game. He eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in the game and finished with 27 points, tied with Hicks for the game-high. Myrick is a high-level scorer who is capable of scoring points in bunches.
Javontae Jones, 6’0 PG Rancocas Valley 2020
The Jeff Coney Classic hosts wanted someone to breakout in front of the home fans and Jones responded. The senior captain was the most prolific scorer at the event as he dropped 35 points against Ewing. Jones was at his best attacking the basket as the Blue Devils could not keep him in front. He was lethal from behind the arc and played solid defense. Jones rose his stock the most after his monster performance.
Wisler Sanon, 6’3 SG Paul VI 2021
Jaylen Boyd-Savage and Andrew Harrell were also options here, but Sanon’s all-around play gives him the nod. He played great defense on Jamir Watkins as the VCU commit only made two shots in the game. Sanon attacked the basket hard where he showcased great body control around the rim. He knocked down three shots from downtown and was an all-around playmaker for the Eagles. Sanon already holds a Division I offer from NJIT, but his offer sheet should rise after a performance like that.
Jahmir Smith, 5’8 PG Holy Spirit 2023
Senior Jack Rovillard may have hit the buzzer-beating half-court shot to force overtime against Cherokee, but it was Smith who got them there. The freshman point guard was unguardable off the bounce as Cherokee could not keep him out of the paint. Once Smith got into the lane, he showcased his ability to make tough lay-ups in traffic. The freshman played solid on-ball defense and showed that the game was not too big for him. Smith’s ability to score against the reigning South Jersey Group 4 champions is a sign of big things to come.
Kevin Foreman, 6’1 PG St. Augustine 2020
Elmarko Jackson and Matthew Delaney may have finished with more points than Foreman, but the senior guard had his best game of the season against Bordentown. He ran the Hermits’ offense to perfection alongside Jackson and rarely played out of control. Foreman was aggressive attacking the basket and rarely stood still on the offensive end. If he is able to consistently score over double-digits,than the Hermits will be a tough out in Non-Public A South.
