Baskets were hard to come by in the first half
It was a defensive battle between two teams that featured quality frontcourt players in Jaylon Gibson (GRACE Christian) and Jonas Aidoo (Voyager Academy). Neither player let up much though baskets were hard to come by for both squads. GRACE led by six points after one, but Voyager went on a 7-0 run to take a 14-13 lead before the half. At halftime, GRACE led by 20-16 while they shot 44.4 percent from the field. Voyager shot 7-of-20 from the field.
The role players stepped up for GRACE
In the second half, GRACE got some key baskets from 2021 wing Britton Kilby and 2021 guard Stefon McLeod. Kilby finished with six points in the second half including a 3-point and McLeod finished with five points, a block and a steal off the bench. With their frontcourt having quiet shooting games, Kilby and McLeod stepped up in timely spots to power their team to a win.
Double figure scorers for Voyager showed a different side
Voyager Academy had three players finish scoring in double figures. Deondre Ross (2021), Holden Buchanan (2020) and Dwayne Anderson (2021) all finished with 10 points each despite the result. The downside was the team’s overall shooting woes. They shot 14-of-47 (29.8 percent) from the floor in their one-point loss to GRACE.
Gibson plays big when needed
Jaylon Gibson only finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, a block and a steal but his last two buckets came in key moments for the Eagles as they kept their distance down the stretch. His numbers don’t jump out at you on the paper but you certainly know when he’s on the floor. His development will be fun to watch at Wake Forest next season.
