Game Recaps
vs. Bishop McNamara – 12/27
It was a defensive battle between Liberty Heights and Bishop McNamara (MD) in each team’s opening game of the 2019 Governor’s Challenge. While Liberty Heights jumped out to a 18-12 lead after one quarter, both teams combined to score just 15 points on four field goals in the second quarter. In a grind it out style game, 2020 wing Kahari Rogers found his way on offense, finishing with 20 points, six rebounds and two assists in a 52-47 victory. Rogers was the only player that scored in double-figures while Kam Edwards put up eight points on two made 3-pointers and two free throws off the bench.
vs. Balboa – 12/28
It looked like this game would start out similar to their first one, but Liberty Heights used a 22-5 outburst in the second quarter to coast in this one against Balboa School (CA). They held off a late rally and in the end, secured a 62-55 victory with Rogers leading the scoring attack once again with 16 points. Kam Edwards also finished with 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point land and unsigned senior Dominique Davidson finished with 11 points and seven rebounds in 11 minutes of action. As a team, Liberty Heights shot 18-of-36 from the floor and 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) from behind the arc in the victory.
Prospect Breakdowns
Kahari Rogers – Guard/Wing
Rogers was probably the top performer from an all-around standpoint for Liberty Heights. He used his length to score just as well as he used it to rebound the basketball, which is one of his more underappreciated qualities from the wing. He shot the ball 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from 3-point range while averaging 18 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game across two contests. All in all, he had a solid outing doing what he does best. Hofstra and North Carolina A&T have offered.
Kam Edwards – Guard
Edwards had a decent outing at the 2019 Governor’s Challenge. He set the tone in their second game shooting the ball from behind the arc, going 3-of-4 from the arc and 4-of-5 from the overall field. On the weekend, he made a total of five 3-pointers, playing well within himself while shooting 5-of-9 from the arc. It’s certainly something for him to build upon going forward.
Tay Williams – Forward
2020 forward Tay Williams has really started to understand his role as rim runner and rebounder for this squad. He didn’t fill up a stat sheet at the Governor’s Challenge but he was feasible with five points, seven rebounds, a block and a steal in his best outing for Liberty Heights. He’s still finding his way on offense but he’s still a long, durable big man that can run the floor, rebound and protect the paint.
Jemal Davis – Forward/Wing
2020 forward Jemal Davis is an intriguing prospect given his ability to protect the rim and create off the dribble. He put up eight points, nine rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block against McNamara and seven points, five rebounds and six blocks against Balboa. At 6-foot-9, Davis has the tools to emerge as another solid paint presence for Liberty Heights and is starting to find his way on the hardwood.
Dominique Davidson – Forward
Davidson is another forward that’s starting to find his way, especially on the offensive end. He’s a big body in the post at 6-foot-7 that uses his size well to establish position in the paint and finish strong. As he learns to stay out of foul trouble, he’ll find his way on the floor a lot more. Right now, he’s a bit too physical and tends to foul quite a bit.
