Here were 10 observations from the three games I viewed:
#1 Buckeye has some nice youth on their roster.
#2 Seton has one freshman on JV that will probably start next year with Peyton Lee.
Peyton Lee SG 6’2 2023 Seton Catholic
-A high IQ scoring guard who can score it from all three levels. The lefty can hit the 3pt shot with range plus loves getting into the paint using the floater. He is crafty, smart and skilled.
#3 One freshman player stood out from Seton Catholic’s freshman team:
Charles Heil PF 6’3 2023 Seton Catholic
-A very strong post player who has wider shoulders and can control the paint. He has a polished jump hook shot he uses often to score. For a freshman, he is a great rebounder as he understands how to use his body and smartly boxes out well. He also happens to be a Nationally ranked Pitcher (#65 in country) and ranked #1 RHP in AZ!!!
#4 Buckeye JV team have two possible starters for next year with Jason Ernest and Jerry Leyva Jr.
Jason Ernest 6’3 F 2022 Buckeye
-Strong new forward who moved in from CA and he is originally from Nigeria. He is shockingly also only 14 years old as a sophomore. He has broader shoulders with nice athleticism to throw it down. He runs really well like a wing and has a good motor to rebound the ball. He also blocks shots and closes out to shooters. Offensively he is mostly a face-up player who is knew to the sport and has some court awareness issues but has clear upside.
Ernest has a lot of untapped potential.Jerry Leyva Jr PG 5’8 2023 Buckeye
-Good feel for the game and pace. His best trait is clearly his shooting at this stage of his HS career. He gets it off quickly and is consistent with it. He changes speeds and hesitates well plus can find open teammates. He is a smart decision maker and can drive it plus can get deep inside for rebounds. He will need to get stronger like a typical freshman.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Leyva Jr playing heavy minutes on varsity next year.Varsity game:
#5 Buckeye will only get better as the season goes on with 6’7 2021 DJ Johnson.
#6 Buckeye will be a dangerous playoff team. They will have size when Johnson returns next Friday, a star guard, just enough shooters and athletic defenders.
#7 Buckeye’s Tay Boothman is clearly one of the top unsigned guards.
#8 Seton is struggling this year after losing two big time shooters from last year in Jackson Lee and Carson Mittum and haven’t recovered from it yet. They will need more consistent play from Keyshon Upchurch to compliment Hanson.
#9 Seton’s Michael Hanson had a heck of a good game and should lean on him scoring the ball more moving forward.
#10 Here were the Varsity standouts:
Buckeye 71 Seton 58
Tay Boothman PG 6’0 2020 Buckeye
-Big time shooter off the catch and has improved off the dribble as well. He makes the game look easy and when he is rolling, he is hard to stop. He has become a little stronger as he added almost 10 lbs of muscle and has really become that real PG. He makes his teammates better and always has that air of confidence. He also drove the ball better than usual and scored it through contact plus he didn’t just settle for jumpers even though he could of since he was hot and hit 5 3’s. He finished with a game high 28 points with 6 assists.
Jayson Redhouse CG 6’0 2022 Buckeye
-High IQ scorer can shoot it. He has deep range ans gets it off quickly. He also has a good sense of where his teammates are and is a good passer. He has no fear of taking any shot and he could lead the team in scoring next year for the Hawks.
Matthew Henry-Harrison SG 5’9 2023 Buckeye
-Active defensive guard who can score. He can hit the 3pt shot and is a strong downhill attacker. He is very active on defense with steals and he is very scrappy. He has good length and I expect him to make a big leap next year alongside Redhouse.
Michael Hanson SF 6’4 2020 Seton Catholic
-A tough face-up wing who can shoot it. He had 20 points Tuesday night with 4 3pt shots made. He is a physical driver and creates contact and can score it or get fouled. He is an unselfish player who makes good reads.
