While we can debate between Wilcher, Omoruyi and Lane as to who will stake their claims as the best player on the team, Wilcher is more than a third wheel that possesses massive upside.
A 6’5 shooting guard, Wilcher is the most dynamic scorer on the Lions team and among the best in the entire state. With a firm commitment to Xavier intact, look for the 2020 graduate to have his best season yet. As the game of basketball continues to be dominated by perimeter play, Wilcher is nothing short of a marksman who can turn a tight game into a blowout in minutes.
Last October, Wilcher showcased his dynamic shooting when he scored 25 points while making five three-pointers in a 72-58 victory over Camden. Widely regarded as a top-100 2020 recruit, Wilcher turned down offers from other big programs, including Cincinnati, Fordham, Minnesota, and Providence.
Lane transferring into the program will also be huge for Wilcher and his continued development. Lane, a very talented point guard, and ball-handler will create havoc often, forcing teams to play on their heels and creating open shots for Wilcher.
After averaging 15 points per game as a junior and a quick release from three, Xavier coach Travis Steele believes he has landed the best shooter in the class of 2020.
“C.J. is the best shooter that I’ve seen in the class of 2020 in the entire country,” Steele stated in a recent press release. “C.J. can make shots from all over the floor, whether in the post, off the catch or off the dribble. He also really knows how to play and he knows how to use his body. He sees things on the floor and can make his teammates better. He is a great shooter, but he is a lot more than that. He’s a scorer and I think he will bring a different dimension on the offensive end.”
The Lions have one three out of the last seven New Jersey Tournament of Champions titles; Wilcher will need to live up to his reputation as a steady offensive force that can score at will if they want to win four out of the last eight.
