The Crusaders Non-Public A state title and runner up finish in the New Jersey Tournament of Champions (TOC) last season are nothing to sneeze at, combined with a star duo of seniors Matt Zona and Raejon Figures.
Bergen Catholic has it all, but the X factor will be class of 2022 point guard Will Richardson. Richardson can score at will from all three levels, leaving him with virtually no major weakness on the offensive side of the ball.
Last year’s senior point guard Doug Edert was dynamic for the Crusaders over his career in which he surpassed the 1,000 points plateau. While those shoes will be tough to fill, Richardson offers a heightened level of explosiveness that is entirely too difficult for most high school teams to deal with. Richardson’s first step is as good as anyone in the state, getting to the basket with ease.
Bergen Catholic shouldn’t miss Edert much in terms of running the offense either. Richardson is a capable and talented playmaker. With his ability to get to the basket, teammates on the perimeter should see ample open shots consistently. Dominating at Hoops Group team camp, Richardson is confident he will become a household name very soon.
“I notice it, but I like being the underdog,” Richardson told Hoop Group. “If they don’t know who I am now, they will soon.”
While Richardson is a proven scorer, the Sophomore is eager to show off his entire repertoire.
“The more people watch me they will see I’m a complete player and will do whatever it takes for my team to win whether it is scoring, passing or guarding their best player,” Richardson told Hoop Group. “I’m going to do it all and that’s Will Richardson.”
The Crusaders 2018-2019 season come to an end after losing to Scottie Lewis and the mighty Ranney Panthers in the New Jersey TOC final. Richardson ensures that won’t be the case next time around.
“As a freshman, it taught me a lot and now I know what it’s like to be on that stage, so next time we finish on top.”
With experience under his belt, elite athleticism and excellent ball skills, Richardson is one of the likely breakout candidates in New Jersey.
