The WBY Shootout tipped off on Thursday with multiple intriguing and exciting matchups. I was able to catch three games at Concordia University during the afternoon.
Here are some prospects that stood out during Thursday’s competition:
Grafton faced a significant deficit in the first half. The Blackhawks were able to make a comeback and eventually steal a win from Kaukauna because of Brock Heffner’s great play. Heffner made the paint his property by blocking shots, rebounding, and displaying his wide collection of post moves.
The Grafton power forward finished with 26 points in the comeback victory.
Chris Morgan is currently ranked as the ninth-best prospect in the 2022 class, yet he is still somewhat of an enigma. I have seen Morgan play multiple times. Sometimes he lives up to the hype and other times he fades into the background. But, after watching him play against Grafton on Thursday, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for Morgan.
The guard has a ton of talent that just needs to be channeled properly. Playing on a Kaukauna team that asks a lot of its guards has definitely forced Morgan to change his play style up a little bit. Give the sophomore some time to figure some things out. He will be very good down the road.
When Logan Landers wants to dominate, he will. There was no player on Mineral Point that had any chance to slow Landers down on Thursday afternoon. He was too big, too strong, too tough, and too versatile. Landers can bully people in the paint, but he also has a smooth jumper to pair with his positional size.
He is the perfect big — Brookfield Academy is lucky to have him.
Max Kunnert’s scoring ability was unmatched in BA’s win on Thursday. Kunnert dropped 18 points and took home game MVP honors. He is not receiving a ton of college interest now but it shouldn’t be too long before the SG earns his first scholarship offer. Kunnert is a very skilled player that will make a college program very happy when he commits.
Grant Asman’s picture should be next to the word potential in the dictionary.
Asman has everything that college coaches are looking for in a stretch four. He can block shots, rebound, and make outside shots. In Kimberly’s devastating loss to Arrowhead, Asman knocked down four triples in the first half. If he can add a little bit more muscle to his wiry frame, Asman should be able to find a Division One suitor.
What goes up must come down. This saying embodied Jackson Paveletzke’s performance in Kimberly’s loss to Arrowhead. The sophomore guard started the game on fire, finding the bottom of the net on six three-point attempts in the first half. But, the intermission seemed to cool him down because he wasn’t the same in the second half.
Despite his mediocre play in the second period, I still really like what Paveletzke brings to this Papermaker team. He is a guard who can put up big numbers in the stat sheet. When all the focus shifts to the older guards in the Kimberly backcourt, the 6-foot sophomore can shine.
Carter Gilmore was the best player on the court at day one of the WBY Shootout. Gilmore was simply phenomenal in all aspects of the game. He scored, passed, rebounded, and defended with excellence. Most teams would have thrown up the white flag after taking the beating that Arrowhead took in the first half. Gilmore would not let this happen. He was able to drag his team to the big non-conference win.
