We understand that is it early in the season but that does not mean that we are not looking for players to take a deeper look at and put on our radars. For the Senior group, they do not have as much time as others so we are making sure that we get on it early and will keep up with players to take a look at. Here are five senior bigs that have stood out in the first couple weeks. We understand that it is a small sample size but we still would like to acknowledge players that have stood out.
Logan Dexter – Mountain Range
Mountain Range is a team that has gotten off to a solid 4-1 start and through five games it has been the Logan Dexter show. He is up to 18.8 points a game but is also dominating the game in every facet of the game. He is going inside and finishing over smaller defenders, powering through guys and also knocking down 3-pointers to open up the defense as well. While the explosive scoring nights have been great, where he has separated himself is on the boards. He is amongst the top in the entire conference in both points and also rebounds 7.8 a game. He is a two-way player that is playing well above his size and he is someone that is making his case of being ranked very, very soon.
Dominant Valverde-Priester – Palmer
Palmer jumped onto radars when they had that big overtime win over Mead to open up the season. Now, with a 3-1 record, they take a week off before going up against their biggest test yet in Denver East. Kolben Barney has been Palmer’s best player but that is not without help from his frontcourt running mate Valverde-Priester. Valverde-Priester is stuffing the stat sheet. He is putting up 7.8 points and his 9.3 rebounds a game are amongst the top of the state as well. He is a force down low that is playing the passing lanes, he is taking the ball, securing boards and starting breaks and Palmer is a team that everyone should take a look at as they have a few players that can go. Let’s see how long he can keep this up.
Jeremiah Taylor – Hinkley
Hinkley is off to a 4-0 start and is coming off of a signature win over a pretty good Fruita Monument team in the Bear Creek Invitational. There are a few players on the Hinkley team that is off to a great start but a player that has really stood out is Senior big Jeremiah Taylor. Hinkley has two players averaging in double-figures but a team that has guys that can get up the court and go, while they have scored outside and also had their guards penetrate the defense a player that is down low banging and putting up big numbers is Taylor. Taylor is a forward that is putting up just under 10 points a game and also averaging 8.0 rebounds a game to go along with it. He is coming off of the best game of his career in which he put up 18 points and had 13 rebounds to go along with it. He is a player to watch moving forward and as long as Hinkley can keep winning I am sure the masses will follow.
Caleb Hanchett – Castle View
Castleview has been an up and down team to begin the season. They have good wins in two close ones where they edged out Gateway and Monarch and a blow-out in Ponderosa but now are on a two-game losing streak and looking to bounce back. Castleview is a team that has a couple of capable scorers, a couple of slashers and a few defenders but the man in the middle has been Hanchett. Hanchett is a player is that fights for every single board, boxes out and keeps plays alive. He is averaging a team-high 8.0 rebounds a game and is also blocking shots as well. If the Sabercats plan on getting back on the right track it is going to take him to keep up this kind of production with also scoring as well. We will keep an eye on him.
JR William – Thornton
Thornton is not off to a great start whatsoever as they have failed to pick up a win, but there is one player that has been consistent in every game and that is William. William has been a force down low as the lone bright spot for the team. He is also one of the state leaders thus far in the rebounding category as he is at 10 a game. I do expect these numbers to level out a bit as the season progresses if Thornton is not able to pick up wins. He uses his athletic body and strength to get the best against other bigs and through three games has been a player that teams have had issues with slowing down and boxing out.
