Here are some of the top players to watch Saturday:
Cole Myers, Sr., Richland
Perhaps the best player in the event, Myers is a returning all-state wing who can score from all levels on the court, rebound, defend and make plays. He’s a strong 3-point shooter, money from mid-range and has the athleticism to get to the rim and finish in traffic.
Joe Hurlburt, Soph, Enderlin
Hurlburt is the best prospect that’ll take the floor Saturday, as the 6-foot-9 sophomore is already starting to earn Division I looks. He’s a two-way force, showing the ability to control the paint defensively with his length and quickness while also presenting problems for defenders with his ability to finish inside and space the floor to the 3-point line.
Gavin Reiland, Sr., Richland
Reiland is one of the best two-way guards in Class B this year, using his quickness and athleticism to wreak havoc on opposing ball handlers and in the passing lanes. He’s got deep range but he’s at his best when he’s getting into the paint and make plays.
Trey Brandt, Soph., Beulah
Just a sophomore, but Brandt plays beyond his years at the point guard spot. He averaged 11 points and five assists as a freshman, helping lead the Miners to the state tournament and he’ll have more on his plate as a sophomore.
Jesse White, Jr., White Shield
One of the most explosive scorers in Class B, White has the ability to dominate a game and fill up the stat sheet like few others. White Shield is a little off the radar but is one of the contenders in Region 8 this year. White is a big reason why.
Noah Swenson, Jr., Oak Grove
Swenson had a terrific sophomore season for the Grovers, averaging 16 points and eight rebounds. The 6-foot-6 junior will get to deal with Beulah’s talented frontcourt Saturday and show what he’s capable of. He’s an excellent rebounder on both ends of the floor, has a soft shooting touch and can create his own shot in the post.
Jonah Larson, Sr., Beulah
Larson averaged a double-double last year for the Miners and will be more heavily featured this winter. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound senior is a load to deal with in the paint because of his strength and willingness to stay within himself. You won’t see him venture beyond the paint far, but he’s incredibly effective because few guys can move him.
Dawson Zuroff, Jr., Glen Ullin/Hebron
Zuroff is a breakout candidate this year in Class B. He’s an athletic wing who can defend at a high level, create offense off the dribble, shoot effectively from the 3-point line and contribute a lot in transition.
Gus Hurlburt, Soph., Enderlin
Hurlburt would be the best sophomore on just about every team except his own but the 6-foot-7 forward is multifaceted and capable of impacting the game in a lot of ways. He’s a solid scorer around the rim and in the mid-range, can rebound and make plays in complementary fashion.
Carter Lingen, Sr., Richland
One of the best pure point guards in Class B, Lingen sets the tone for a Richland team that has state title potential. He’s a terrific 3-point shooter and controls the tempo really well for the Colts. His on-ball defense is effective too, as he’s instinctual and tough.
